Family History
Rittenhouse
One of the "branches" in the family tree of the Snavely family of
Oxford, Ohio is the Rittenhouse family.
Our earliest trace of the Rittenhouse family, from which William
Snavely is decended, is Wilhelm Rittenhouse. It is believed most of the people with the surname Rittenhouse, and other variant spellings in America can trace their ancestry back to Wilhelm, who settled in William Penn's colony of Germantown (presently a suburb of Philadelphia) in 1688. Wilhelm is known as the first Mennonite minister in the New World, as well as being the first paper maker in America. His house and mill still exist in Germantown, PA.
Wilhelm's grandson, David Rittenhouse, was a friend of Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. David's biography can be found in many encyclopedias. He was a noted astronomer, helped survey the Mason-Dixon line, invented the first 8-day clock, and his portrait hangs in the dining room of George Washington's home, Mt. Vernon.
