Wesley's 2001 Awards

Wesley's 2001 Awards

As I look back at the year 2001, I've decided to start the first ever Wesley Awards, based totally on my opinions about the year- think of them like the Oscars- only with no glamour, celebrities, or even a real award. At the end, I'll even offer you a peek into the year 2002. Oh well, here goes.....

Person of the Year: (tie) Rudy Giuliani and George W. Bush. What can I say about these two guys? They were simply amazing throughout the closing months of 2001. The attacks on our country could have done much greater damage, but these two individuals embodied the American spirit through their compassion and courage. These characteristics make us Americans what we are, and these two men are terrific examples. I wanna see a Bush/ Giuliani Republican ticket in 2004- looks like a winner to me.

Actor: I'll post it when I decide

Actress of the Year: Kate Beckinsale. In January 2001, I hadn't even heard of Kate Beckinsale, but she's became my favorite actress in the span of one year. I think her performances in Pearl Harbor and Serendipity were highly under-rated. She made her character in Pearl Harbor, seem sincere (which I imagine is difficult to do when you're playing a two-timer), and showed her range by doing the romantic comedy Serendipity. I predict this beautiful actress will continue her success for years to come.

Movie of the Year: Serendipity. Call me a sucker, but I liked this movie. John Cusack is a great actor, and Kate Beckinsale is a stunning and terrific actress. The plot, revolved around one of my favorite topics- the idea of fate-and was both thought-provoking and entertaining, while using the backdrop of New York City in winter. For these reasons, I feel it was one of the best movies I've seen all year. (Runner up: Not Another Teen Movie- Hilarious!!)

Worst Movie of the Year: Jurassic Park III. What? This movie was AWFUL. There was very little plot, few new dinosaurs, and the ending made NO sense! (Runner-up: Behind Enemy Lines, featuring the weird camera angles and flimsy story line-i.e. the guy was flying in a demilitarized zone!)

Overrated Movie of the Year: Lord of the Rings. I liked the books a lot and the movie WAS good, but it was entirely TOO long. I realize they tried to follow the text closely, but I found this movie difficult to sit through. The graphics and acting were great; however, The Hobbit should have been made into a movie, thus eliminating 30 minutes of exposition in this movie. The movie was goodand worth a possible second viewing, but not worth the excessive hype.

Underrated Movie of the Year: American Outlaws. This movie was awesome! A "modern" Western in the mold of Tombstone, with Ali Larter to boot (Western and boot, get it? Ha ha ha!) It told the story of the James-Younger gang with a cool soundtrack featuring Saliva. Great movie,, but only in theaters for a couple of weeks in August.
Overplayed Song of the Year: "I'm Real" by Jennifer Lopez. Everytime I turn on the radio, this song is on there- and it's not that good, either.

2002 Projections

2002 Music Comeback of the Year: Shania Twain. After a quiet 2001, I predict Shania's album will sail up the charts.
2002 NL M.V.P: Ken Griffey, Jr., of course =)
Most Likely to Turn Up Dead in 2002: A certain terrorist leader. Need I say more?
