April 19, 1995: James "Bo" Gritz, Populist Party

Ron Engelman: Our next speaker is a man that, uh- I, I've had unbelievable respect for. I served in Vietnam, I flew helicopters over there. This gentleman was over there also. The most decorated soldier of Vietnam. A colonel. And a colonel that understands after retiring, and probably understood while he was in the service, what's really going on in our country today. That we cannot trust our own government. And as I said, a survey, was on television last night that said 56% of the people of this country, do not trust their own government! That says a lot, ladies and gentlemen! That lets us know exactly, what the people of our country, were finally waking up. And I believe, that a lot of the awakening, became, or began, when this happened at Mt. Carmel February 28th, and culminated, two years ago today. People saw what our government was, was capable of doing. The brutality of that government. I have a man, a gentleman here, a colonel in the United States Army, a Green Beret- who, served with dig-, dignity in the military. And, now, has his own radio talk show- I was with that, I was fortunate enough to be a guest on. And, I'd just like to introduce Colonel Bo Gritz. Colonel? [Yay! applause]

Thank you, Clive. Well, I'm humbled by the speakers that precede me. The people that were here. I'm just two years two late. And, uh, I'm ashamed for it. I knew, as soon as this happened, of what could happen. I called the FBI on the second day, even before the Hostage Response Team, took jurisdiction here. I said it looks to me like you got the same thing going, at Waco, that you had with Weaver, you're not handling it very well. And Gene Glenn, the chief agent there, said, "You're right, Bo. Dick Rogers is, taking over jurisdiction today, from the BATF. I'll call him, and see if maybe you can't make a bridge there, between the Davidians and the government." Of course, nothing happened. I called them again. I sent a, Federal Express letter to Butch Reno. I sent a Federal Express letter to Bill Clinton, it should have been sent to Hillary probably, it would've, had more impact.

And then on- the day before- the 18th- the evening- Jack McLamb and I, and we were at a preparedness expo in Las Vegas, Nevada. We were sitting in the Golden Nugget. Jack- it was about 10 PM- he looked at me and says, "Bo, we've got to get in there. They're going to kill those people!" And I said, "Jack, you're right." He said, "Let's jump on it! I have an aeroplane, I've got parachutes, I've made many combat assaults." I didn't know about Jack, but he had been valiant up there at Weaver's. I said, "Jack, the winds are at about forty knots right now. But I'll tell you what. Tomorrow morning at first light, I'll call one more time. If they don't let us go in, then we'll jump on it." And of course, the next morning, I turned on the, tube, and, uh, it was early morning, Nevada time. And there I saw the gas being pumped into the Branch Davidians. I'm an expert at this stuff. I had told the Dallas newspaper- Houston, Waco, they had all called me, and said, all right, colonel, what happens next? And I said, the next thing they'll do is take armored vehicles, they'll make an announcement that the siege is over, that they don't want to hurt anybody, but they're going to punch a hole, at a certain place, the reason that they do punch holes is so that they don't set off booby traps, or things they're afraid of- and they'll send in their Hostage Response Team to clear the rooms and bring any that are there out. Well, you see I just underestimated the cowardness, of the federal law enforcement agencies. Because, they didn't, send in their Hostage Response Team. Instead they pumped insufferable CS gas. I saw Butch stand up there and say, it was tear gas and she expected, uh, the mothers to run and get the children and rush out of Mt. Carmel, to the embracing arms of the FBI. And I just wish that I could see her, in a glass-enclosed cage, where not hundreds of gallons of CS gas, which is eighty times more powerful, than tear gas, we're prevented from using it by the United Nations- even in Vietnam, we couldn't use it, except to save our lives- and I just wanted to see a little bit, put in there, so we could watch her, breakdance a little bit, so that she might demonstrate to the country, what CS gas is actually like. I'm a demolitionist. I know, what brings down buildings. Like, the federal building in Oklahoma City. And, when I saw the CS gas going into the Branch Davidian here- I told my bride, I said, they're going to burn the place down. This is stupid! There were Special Forces advisors here! I know Dick Rogers. The same guy that gave us, uh, Weaver, was bent apparently to give us Waco. He knew what was going to happen. The Chinese have an old saying: "The first step to wisdom is by calling things by their right name." The people at the Branch Davidian, the babies and the children that we're talking about here today, were murdered. In a simple word. They were murdered, and there is no statute of limitations on murder.

Now is it coincidence that Oklahoma City- a federal building blows up at, uh, 9 AM, the same time that, this remembrance was started out here? Is it a coincidence that David Koresh is 33, at the same age as the messiah? When he is taken, also by an abusive government. Who asked what is truth, and then, Pilate would not stay for the answer. You have to look and see- I was willing, I wanted to, I made a terrible mistake. I honestly thought, in listening and watching the news every day, that I believed we could have made a difference. We could have jumped on this place and would have. We could have arrested them, the way that I did at Randy Weaver's. There are ways to break a police line. We could have done it. But we waited, I listened, I believed the government. I wanted to read, David Koresh's Seven Seals. I wondered, what it was that was so important, on a suspicion of an illegal weapons charge, they would come in like the Schutzstaffe. And, I can only think, that God's will, be done. If it were not for the messiah, if it were not for Jesus Christ, and his sacrifice, we would have no way home, to our Father in heaven. If it was not for, these people, and I wonder if there were- and if you can't, probably count them through history- the same number of disciples, and apostles, and followers, who lost their lives, cruelly and terribly, at the hands of abusive governments- I just wonder if maybe the call isn't there. God loves us, we are His children. If you read Revelations, there are three angels that are sent out, with warnings. Even the messiah, told, his disciples, what things would be like in these Latter Days. Friends, the government has turned, from protector into predator. And, they are plundering, the people and their property. And, what happened in Oklahoma City, shouldn't have. And what happened here, shouldn't have. But it is symptomatic, of America's body politic, today. April 19th, 1995. Just like it was April 19th, 1775, when the people said no! We're drawing a line. No, we're not going past this place. If it would not have been, for this sacrifice, I don't believe America would have their head down a rectal defilade today. I don't believe there would be, unorganized militias popping up all over. Showing us, that something is wrong, with America's body politic. And, we are the only ones that are going to change it. [applause]

Now, I, support the unorganized militias and I believe, they have a paramount duty. That paramount duty, is in remembrance, of those who were murdered. That were taken here, where we stand. It is to the living, that it might not occur again. I don't think the militias' weapons are rifles and bayonets. I think the militia's battleground, is a concrete jungle. I think that their weapons are to take the law- to have the cojones to stand up. Because I'll tell you something. Never again! Never again! Never again, will I be fooled, by thinking the government is going to allow, a peaceful resolution. And so it's through the militia- [applause] You can't do it by yourself. Old gentleman sitting here applauding, Tom Baker out there. You cannot do it by yourself. Your arms aren't long enough. But together- I'm going to tell you something- together, if we never forget these people- and I was thinking about them the other day, as I was talking to Ron Engelman on the radio program. And I was thinking about, the Lao that I had served with, the Cambodians, the Africans, the Asians, the South Americans, all over this world. And I thought, you know, as long as I remember these people, they're really not dead. I remember my dad, who died in World War II. I remember my friends. They live within us. I know a few things. I don't know a lot. I do have courage. But I know a few things. One is, we are champions, today. We are the champions of, these souls, right here. Because we are here. They are cheering us, today, for what we can do. If we will do it. There are legions of angels, that we are champions to, because we are sons and daughters of Almighty God. And don't tell me- because, maybe in- in reflection of what David Koresh might say- don't tell me that you cannot stand. They did commit suicide at Masada. They did not at the Branch Davidian. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego said no to Nebuchadnezzar. We will not kneel! And they didn't. And God chose to preserve them. We are sons and daughters of Almighty God today. And the challenge is before us like never before, and it is emphasized, in the souls, that now are with God. I think He loves us, and I think He's given us a message. And I think we are the champions. And if we will just, give Him the glory, but if we will put ourselves in the breach, then this will never happen again. But we've got to do it. We can't do it alone- we gotta do it together. And, we'll soon have, friends, I have it on top authority- we'll soon have perfect government. We will see them again. They will come forward in the first resurrection. And there will be glory, to God, and there will be joy, upon this Earth, and probably right here. Upon this hallowed ground. So I stand here as your brother. I'm two years late. And I'm ashamed for it. But I make a commitment to you, it's not going to happen again. With your help, one family, children of God, we'll stand together. Thank you. [applause]
