Tsinoy says: Surely, there's a better way to treat your partner, other than what goes with the initials in the story. A lot of jokes have been told about the pitfalls of marriage. In a way, the jokes helped us to focus on the difficult aspects of this relationship. Couples today must be missing something. There ought to be more to marriage than the dull routine of following the norms expected from husbands and wives. |

When I'm Sixty Four by Lennon and McCartney When I get older, losing my hair, many years from now Will you still be sending me a valentine, birthday greeting, bottle of wine? If I'd been out 'till quarter to three, would you lock the door? Will you still need me, will you still feed me, When I'm sixty four? I could be handy, mending a fuse, when your lights have gone You can knit a sweater by the fireside, Sunday morning, go for a ride Doing the garden, digging the weeds, who could ask for more? Will you still need me, will you still feed me, When I'm sixty four? Every summer we can rent a cottage at the Isle of Wight, if it's not too dear We shall scrimp and save Grandchildren on your knee Vera, Chuck and Dave Send me a postcard, drop me a line, stating point of view Indicate precisely what you mean to say, yours sincerely wasting away Give me an answer, fill in a form, mine for ever more Will you still need me, will you still feed me, When I'm sixty four? Ho! |
Thomas Moore (Soul Mates, 1994) says that there is more than the equation of husband and wife in marriage. There is a third element - the soul. It is the medium, the meditating element, that holds everything together. Moore explains that the soul-centered image of marriage is one that respects the less subjective, less intentional elements in a relationship. This needs an atmosphere of openness and inquiry to discover what the couple wants from the relationship. Some relationships ask for distance, others for closeness; some for children, others for the life of a couple; some want frequent changes, others want to get into a mold and want to stay there. |
We can go on giving other heartwarming examples here. Or we can pause and listen to what John Lennon and Paul McCartney have to say about the little things that sustain a marriage through sunset years. Quoted in the opposite column are the lyrics of their song "When I'm Sixty Four". This is an interactive homepage, so please sing along with the Beatles. |

Some people were sitting in a bar when one guy says, "Hi, I'm Larry, I'm a SNAG." Another guy says, "What's that?" The first guy says, "That means I am a Single, New Age Guy." Another one says, "My name is Gary, and I am a DINK." |

Perhaps, this is the reason why the very first account of Jesus' miracle was set at a wedding feast in Cana. He changed water into wine. If we look at its deeper meaning, what Jesus changed was the flat necessity of life (water) that we put into marriage. He transformed this into an active, sparkling, tingling and inspiriting element of the soul (wine). That is why marriage became one of the sacraments. Yes, it's not enough that husbands bring home the bacon, or wives wash, iron,f@@k, etc. There is a better view of marriage. |
Moore added that the other way to care for the soul in marriage is through praise and celebration. Like going on a candle-lit dinner to celebrate our wedding anniversary. |

We can express our feelings directly or through others. We can e-mail them an appreciative note. It could take the form of a poem, a verse, a quotation, either original or copied. Or for the vocally gifted among us, we can sing the songs that brought us closer together during our youthful years. |
