| Angels and Demons |
| Angels and Demons is the first book in the Robert Langdon series. Most people know Robert Langdon from The DaVinci Code, which is the second book in the series. Many people think that they should read a series of books in order, but I highly recommend reading The DaVinci Code before reading Angels and Demons. This time, Robert Langdon (who is a world-renowned symbologist) is woken early in the morning by Maximilian Kohler, who askes Robert to come to his research facility. Robert is convinced that this is just another religious zealot, looking for him to confirm some religious symbol that they had found. But after Maximilian sends Robert a fax of a murdered man (Leonardo Vetra) with the symmetrical word "Illuminati" branded onto his chest, Robert realizes that this isn't a joke. The Illuminati is a brotherhood that had been around a long time ago and their arch-enemy is the Church. Many have thought that the Illuminati group is no longer in existence, but now Robert believes that they might still be around. Robert agrees to come to the research facility, which he is told is only an hours flight away. But it turns out that he is flying to Geneva, Switzerland in a plane that goes Mach-15. When he gets to the research facility, Maximilian and Robert learn that Leonardo Vetra and his adopted daughter Vittoria Vetra have created antimattter which is very dangerous (it can liquidate half a mile radius with just a quarter of a gram, if it came into contact with matter). They are stunned when they find out that a quarter of a gram of anti-matter has been stolen, and taken into Vatican City. Robert and Vittoria are thrown together in the race to find the anti-matter and save Vatican City, from the Illuminati. They hunt through catacombs, sealed crypts, deserted cathedrals and the long-forgotten Illuminati lair in search of the Illuminati and clues to where they have hidden the anti-matter. Oh and did I mention that they've only 24 hours to find the anti-matter before it liquidates Vatican City? This is a thrilling read, keeping you guessing until the very end. Be sure to have enough time to read large chunks (or even the whole book), because once you start reading you won't want to put it down until you find out how it ends! |
