Hello and welcome to the page that details the Wave position on a chessboard.

This position is fairly uncommon and difficult to achieve, but may offer substantial rewards if it is achieved. Do not go out of your way to achieve this position. However, sometimes the opportunity presents itself, and then you could possibly attain a similar position to this one.

Advantages

  • Interlocked Knights in or near the center, with a wide choice of squares to go to during the middlegame.
  • Bishops on neighbouring diagonals. While one is immediately a threat, the other is a potential danger when the wall of pawns is exchanged off.
  • The "Wave Crest" is so named as an alternative to the StoneWall position. This one has a twist, with the a-pawn ready to push forward and unveil the Rook behind it.

Disadvantages

  • The holes in the wall at c4 and e4 can be exploited by enemy pieces.
  • The Kingside is quite weak. A sustained attack may be successful unless ...e6 blocks that Bishop's diagonal.
  • Bb2 is passive. An option to keep in mind is to shift this Bishop to the Kingside before the e3 move.

Move Sequence
  1. d4. The Queen's Pawn Opening.
  2. b4. Risky but effective against ...c5.
  3. c3. Supporting both pawns.
  4. e3. The last brick in the wall.
  5. Bd3. Quite a secure for the opening.
  6. Qc2. Threatening h7 immediately.
  7. h3. Before ... Bg4.
  8. Nf3. The wait and see move of the Grunfeld.
  9. 0-0. Castling to safety.
  10. Nd2. Interlocking both Knights for stability.
  11. Bb2. Allowing both Rooks to link.
  12. An innovative idea that seeks to exploit and question the usual Black moves against 1. d4.

Pitfalls
Throughout the entire opening sequence, black can give white trouble with these moves:
  • Na4 is potent, especially if supported by the b-pawn or the Bishop
  • e4 pins the Knight and Bishop, and also makes for a troublesome clamp on the center pawns
  • Bb7 can trouble the Kingside late in the game, especially if a Rook or Queen assists along the file

Similar Openings
1. d4 d5 is the Queen's Pawn Game.
2. Nf3 is the Grunfeld Reversed.
