Introduction:
Have you ever traveled to a different country?  Today is your lucky day!  You and your friene will take a trip to Europe!  There are many things to think about as you plan your stay.  You need to remember to budget your money carefully for food, lodging and site seeing activities.  You are about to set forth on an amazing journey to a different country.  After your journey, please report back to the class and share about your trip!
Task:
You will create a poster of your city to display in the classroom.  It will include the information that you learned from your research.  Also, you will give an oral presentation about your adventure to your fellow classmates.
Process:
Overview
You will be traveling to a city in Europe.  This will be assigned to you.  You will be at this European city for one week!  In order to see what your expenses will be, I would like you to plan a typical day.  You will be given $500.  You will need to budget your money for the food, lodging, and site seeing activities.  For food, you will need to set aside $75 in all for that day.

It is important to remember that the United States dollar is not accepted in Europe.  You may need to change currency from dollars to Euros.
This site will help you convert the money.

Step 1 - I will assign each of you to a group.  In your group, there will be two roles:  Lodging Locator and Attraction Adventurer.  Decide who will take which role.

Step 2 - Now that you have chosen your role, please remember that you will do your own research, but communication is important since you are sharing $500.  Please see the teacher for your role sheet.

Step 3 - Before you begin to research your role, please read the following three rubrics.  There rubrics explain how you will be graded.
Role Rubric                         Working with a partner                         Travel Poster

Each of you now will need to scroll down to find your role.  It is time to begin your research!
Lodging Locator
If you are the lodging locator, you are responsible for finding a place to stay in this foreign city.  Remember, you are looking for one day's lodging.  You will need to look at the average nightly rate.  There are many different places that you may stay at, but remember there is a budget.  You need to be a smart shopper and compare prices.  Also, you should be aware of the amenties that are available there.  Please use your planning sheet to document your research.
You will use the same website.
www.hotels.com
Attraction Adventurer
If you are the Attraction Adverturer, you are in charge of finding some points of interest to visit in your city!  What do you think would be interesting to see in the city and would this be sutiable for both people in your group?  Perhaps you will find a museum, a cathedral, or a park.  You need to budget your money wisely since some tourist attractions can be expensive.  Please use your planning sheet to write down your information.

Step 4 - After you have finished researching your assigned role, please meet with your partner to share the information that you found.  At this point, you will need to decide if any changes need to be made due to your budget of $500.

Step 5 - If any changes need to be made, go back to the websites to research your area further.  After you have done that, meet again with your group to decide your expenses for the day.

Step 6 - Clearly write out your ideas for each area if you have changed them.  Please see the teacher for another role page if needed.

Step 7 - After the role pages are complete, each student needs to find one picture to include on the poster about the foreign city that was visited.  Look back at the sites you visited.  Site the URL from which you found the picture.

Step 8 - Together, you will need to find 7 facts about your city.  Please see the teacher for a fact page.  you can use the following links to help you.

Paris
Madrid
Rome

Now that you have decided upon your day's adventure in the city, it is time to create a poster to share your trip with your classmates.  Your poster should include:  both role sheets, a list of 7 facts about your city and 2 pictures that show where you visited.  After you have completed the poster, share it with the class.

Step 10 - Please fill out the self-evaluation form after you have given your presentation.  You may get this from your teacher.

Evaluation:  You will be given two grades for this project.  There are two rubrics which will count towards your individual effort and work.  The collaboration rubric will count toward your group grade.
Both students and teacher will fill out the rubrics and then meet to conference about this final assessment.

Conclusion:  I hope you enjoyed your European vacation!  Managing your money is an important life skill.  Think about how you needed to budget your money for this trip.  What other things in life to you need to budget your money for?  Remember to continue to compare prices as you shop to get the best buy.  You have learned how to be a smart shopper!
