| Naksonjae (Mansion of Joy and Goodness) consists of three court gardens. This is an annex mansion is adjacent to the Ch'angdok-Gung complex. To arrive at Naksonjae from Ch'angdok-gung, one just has to go through one of the numerous gates into the Naksonjae mansion courtyards and surrounding gardens. Naksonjae was where Yi Pang-ja (Princess Masako) lived prior to her death in 1989. In essence Princess Yi Pang-Ja, was the last link between contemporary Korea and the past 500 years of the Choson dynasty tradition. Interestingly in 1927, the Japanese occupants who occupied Ch'angdok-gung as an administrative headquarters, built an addition on to Naksonjae. This is where the Japanese Crown Prince and Princess Pang-Ja lived. However in 1995, the addition was pulled down and Naksonjae was restored to its mid 19th century glory. |

| A view from one of the south eastern courtyard showing the East Wing of Naksonjae. Of special interest is the ornate pavilion perched somewhat vicariously on the roof. Please note the paper screen doors and the emptiness of the rooms. Behind this wing one can see walls and gardens, finishing with bordering trees. It is possible to make out the flowering cherry blossoms. This picture was taken in early May, Spring! |
