Day 5:
Future Day
Instructor: Phil Rossoni
Course: Walkalong Gliders
Date: July 2nd, 2004
Location: Museum of Science, Boston
On the fifth day of class we will design and build a glider. What design features will make the glider fly better? How do birds continue to influence future aircraft design?

What airplane designs are on the drawing board?
Blended Body Wing designs promise greater efficiency. What challenges will this design face? Why is it so great? Will we ever fly around in a Blended Wing Body airliner design?

Getting Closer to Birds: Wings that can change shape
How do wings change shape on today's aircraft? How could aircraft better change shape to better meet the challenges of taking off, flying and landing? We will breifly touch on new technologies and aircraft morphing.

Design your own Walkalong glider
Swept back wings will aid in yaw stability and allow finer pitch control. Elevators create drag. Putting elevators on the swept back wing tips also aids in yaw stability.
