Emerald Eyes

By Linda A. Elliott
One day your laughing eyes were green
Above the emerald shirt you wore
Inspiring such a fragrant scene
My heart I had no more
Another day our spirits touched
A spark flew, oh, so fast
We stared in wonder, in surprise
And lowered, each, our masks
You touched my sleeve
My heart grew still
My breath, it came in gasps
Your words implored, "Stay here for me,"
I will unto the last
I could not leave my heart's desire
For I would surely die
You know now all I love is you
You know now why I sigh
I ask for nothing in return
No fetters would I weave
For love not given is not love
My nature would not thieve
But know that I am here for you
If you should ever cry
And know that I will n'er intrude
Love, I would rather die
