| Starting to look better now - and all this with a cup brush on a grinder. On the left side of this picture (the front of the frame) is a large piece of angle iron going between the sides of the frame - this protects the underside of the radiator. The front bolts that hold the bumper support brackets also hold on this guard. They pass through tubes in the frame, much like the bolts for the front bushings for the front eyes of the leaf springs. One of these bumper support bracket bolts was the most difficult bolt to remove in the entire car, but after three weeks of spraying penetrating oil, hammering from both ends with a six pound sledge, heating with a torch, and twisting with vise-grips, it finally came free. It was the twisting that broke it loose in the end. If a sump shield is fitted for rallying purposes, it fills in the space from under the radiator back to the cross member between the suspension towers. In this instance the front "angle-iron" piece is not used. |
