After cleaning off as much surface rust as I could with a wire wheel on a grinder, I broke down and rented a sandblaster and did the last hard-to-get-at spots with the frame outside on the driveway. It still looks like a beach out there, but it worked well and fast. The whole frame was then covered with a coat of grey rust preventive primer (Armour Coat). I thought "more paint is probably better!" so used a brush. It took about a quart and a half. I deliberated for some time on what colour to paint it. Most TR3 frames were painted black, although there were variations. I have heard of red ones, and even yellow. Although the rest of this frame was black, the shock towers were dark green. Who knows why; it certainly did not seem as though the towers had ever been replaced. Finally I decided on white because it will show any rust starting up. Long after I painted it, the "what colour was the frame?" discussion came around again on the Triumph email list and someone mentioned that original "works cars" (factory built for racing) had white frames so that they could spot any cracks that developed.
