How NOT to measure end float on axle
This is how you measure axle end float on some cars - but not on the Fergie.
The looseness of the bearing is determined by the position of the collar on the axle, so shimming between the hub and the backing plate, or between the backing plate and the trumpet housing, will NOT affect the reading on a dial caliper set up as shown.
I found it convenient to proceed with the assembly by having a stud or two sitting in the axle trumpet, and another stud or two threaded into the hub. The shims can go either between the hub and brake backing plate, or between the brake backing plate and the trumpet, with the same effect.
Too few shims will result in the ends of the two axles binding where they meet in the centre of the differential. The idea is to find that point, and then shim just a bit extra. It takes a bit of time as you need to tighten down the bolts each time you add or remove a shim. In theory, if you have not changed the bearing, the same number of shims should be required as were in place before disassembly.
