The original steering arm seals are leather or felt and by now they are just about all leaking. They had an aluminum flange, as seen in the "before" picture; this type is no longer available.
The "after" picture shows a replacement type that will fit; it is Chicago Rawhide # CR13027. (Despite the company name, it is not made of rawhide; it is the modern type of seal.) The part number for a National seal is 473423.
The new one sits flush with the surface of the steering box and has no flange. If it weren't painted you would see that the outer diameter of it is metal and the inner is rubber, or whatever modern seals are made from.
In the right picture, the screw with the nut is the adjuster to take up play in the steering box. |
