Re-installing the cylinder sleeves
One of the cylinder sleeves installed. You can just see how there is a flat spot on its four sides, such that it can be installed one of four ways. On an engine with slight wear, the sleeves can be removed and turned 90 degrees so that the less worn dimension can wear out next.
The sleeve sits just proud of the top surface of the block and is compressed in place by the cylinder head.
In cylinder #2, you can see part of the figure 8 gasket - you shouldn't; it should be sitting down flat, but I damaged this one.

On the left is the coolant drain tap. In this engine when I opened the tap, nothing emerged. There was a good inch of crud all around the bottom of the water jacket which blocked off the tap. This is the second engine like this that I have done and both were in the same shape. (Consider how old they are.) I believe that if any serious work is being done to the engine, it is a mistake not to remove the sleeves and thoroughly clean out the block.

This picture also shows the governor weights and the "bell" that they move forward to actuate the governor linkage.
On to another view of the partially assembled block.
