The timing gear cover | |||||||||
![]() |
|||||||||
The front of the crankshaft emerges from the large hole at the bottom of the timing cover. There is an oil seal in this location that is typically leaking. By the time you have the timing cover off it is certainly worthwhile to replace this seal as it is inexpensive and otherwise hard to access. They are still available from MF but if you happen to have one around for a Triumph TR2, 3 or 4 or a Volvo B20 engine, it will fit. At about the four o'clock position in this photo is an adjustment screw with a locking nut - hard to see but it's there. Its purpose is to adjust a spring that acts against the governor bell, such that it won't move in and out too quickly as the engine speed is varied. This prevents "hunting". Apparently it is a very sensitive adjustment. |
