Database Management
Project 2 - Summary of Oracle RDBMS Procedures and SQL Programming

Gary Cao
October 1996

        We completed the second assignment according to the following procedure:

1.  Obtained Oracle accounts from the University;

2.  Created a dedicated sub-directory for IS773 Oracle assignment;

3.  Created tables:  j, p, s, spj;

4.  Loaded data to these tables;

5.  Set up control files to run the SQL program;

6. Under the Unix prompt, loaded the data and tables; Under the SQL prompt,
    start SQL programs (with spool-on and spool-off commands);

7. FTP the spooled output file to PC, and printed the file which is attached.

        After completing the first assignment using SQL under Microsoft Access
database software, we started learning the database management systems
in Unix environment (i.e., Oracle 7). In the SQL program files, we used
both SQL*PLUS commands and SQL commands.

        We realized the benefits and difficulties (trade-offs) for both Access and
Oracle.  Access is easier to use but has more limitations on capacities;
Oracle takes more time to learn but has great potential in handling much
larger database system.
