THINKING DAY POSSIBILITIES

I have been conversing with another GS in another state about what they do for Thinking Day.  I know that we do a wonderful job at Thinking Day every year, but I was open to new ideas.  If you would like to check out their website and see how they do Thinking Day and then get back with me, I would appreciate it.  They celebrate the five regions of WAGGGS and this is definitely one area that most GS in USA are not real familiar with.  Check it out and let me know what you think, please!  I especially like her idea of the older girls doing a special section called “Girls’ Go Global”.  pennypetrich@hotmail.com http://dianneward.homestead.com/EventsArea2a.html

This is directly from her email to me:

I promised you I'd share my Thinking Day Event plans for the 5 Regions of WAGGGS as soon as they were out
of my head and on paper... Well here it is...
http://dianneward.homestead.com/EventsArea2a.html

The only info NOT listed is that we will also have older girls leading "GiRL'S GO GLOBAL" activities as a
6th station... and... that we will be giving printouts of what Try-it/Badge activities have been completed at
the event. (ex: Br GS Playing Around the World" - Try-it).
Keep inspiring.

TROOP FUNDRAISER FOR TRIP TO SAVANNAH AND WASHINGTON

Hello All,

I am one of the leaders of WCSU Junior Troop 259.  Our girls are currently planning to have a Garage sale to raise money for a trip to Savannah and/or Washington D.C. this summer (June 2006).

The garage sale will be held on October 8th 2005 in the Grace Church of the Nazarene Gym off Koenig Lane

If you have any items that you would like to donate to the garage sale, we would be happy to take them off your hand.  October 8th is still over a month away, but we wanted to get a jump on donations.  The plan is to have donation items dropped off the evening of October 7th (between 6-8pm) at Grace Church 1006 W. Koenig Ln. and what ever items we have remaining after the sale will be donated to Salvation Army.

For those of you that like to bake, please note that we will accept baked goods as a donation as well.

If you would like to donate and would like the items out of your home/office before the 7th of October, we can discuss and view our options.

After you have had the chance to look around and are willing to donate, please contact me so that we may keep a listing of items received and the person donating.

Please feel free to forward this on to others that may be interested in donating.

If you have any questions or need more information, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you for your time,

SATURDAY OCTOBER 1,2005

We need Girl Scouts to come out and donate an hour of their time to hand out water to high school band students who have marched in the Capital City Marching Contest.

The girls and parents are asked to donate one hour of their time.  In return they will have the chance to get in free to the contest and see some of the best high school marching bands in central Texas perform their shows for the judges and audience.

Girls and parents will fill cups with ice and water, hand out to the students after they perform.  Girls are encouraged to wear something that identifies them as a Girl Scout, but are not required to do so. All ages, Daisy through Senior Scouts are welcome.

We will start setting up at 7:30 am and run until 9p.m.  This year the committee has also asked that we have a water booth on the north side of the stadium so if water is needed before the contest it will be available.

PERVASIVE POWER CHARGE DATE CHANGE

Due to a conflict with the Lance Armstrong’s Ride for the Roses, the date of the Pervasive Power Charge has moved from Sunday, October 23rd to Sunday, October 16th, 2005. We believe changing the date will encourage more runners from the Central Texas community to participate, and the Race will receive the attention and support it deserves. We want the Pervasive Power Charge to succeed and generate the greatest possible benefit for our 15,000 Central Texas Girl Scouts.

If you have any questions or wish to receive more information, please contact Alta Motén at the Girl Scouts-Lone Star Council 512/453-7391 ext. 132, altam@girlscouts-lonestar.org.

With your help, we look forward to making this event even bigger and better than last year! We apologize for any inconvenience the date change may cause and look forward to seeing you on October 16th.

LAST SUMMER SCREENING OF TROOP 1500

This will be your last chance to watch Troop 1500 at the Jeff and Gail Kodosky Program Center. This powerful documentary depicts the girls and moms of Enterprising Girl Scouts Beyond Bars (EGSBB). This powerful documentary, produced and directed by Karen Bernstein and Ellen Spiro, takes you inside the traumatic world of these brave girls who dream of being teachers, doctors, and marine biologists. Troop 1500 premiered at the SXSW Film Festival in March 2005, receiving rave reviews from the Austin American-Statesman and the Austin Chronicle.

Troop 1500 will run for the last time this summer at the Jeff and Gail Kodosky Program Center on Tuesday, August 30th at 6:00 p.m.

We forward to seeing you at this screening. Please keep in mind that the subject matter is not appropriate for children 12 and under. For directions to the Jeff and Gail Kodosky Program Center, please visit the link below.

VICTORY TUTORIAL PROGRAM

This is a great opportunity for our older girls!  It also sounds like it could possibly be a Silver or Gold Award project to some enterprising and motivated young lady!

Dear Penny:

Here are some facts and information about our volunteer program for the Lone Star Council of the Girl Scouts of America.  As a former Girl Scout (and Brownie) and Mom of a former Cub and Boy Scout, I admire the valued community work your organization does and when I saw you at the District's "Back to School Fair" last Saturday, I made an immediate connection as to how we could work together.  We are a library based after school tutorial program working with volunteers - we offer an academic based way for Girl Scouts to earn their Community Service Badges!

I had to attach the map of the seven branches offering VICTORY Tutorials as it is only available to me in Adobe pdf. I did list all seven cites with addresses and phone numbers.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to working with your troop leaders and scouts.  If ANY of your Troop Leaders (or yourself) would like us to make a presentation to a scout group we would be delighted to be there!

Best regards -

VOLUNTEER TUTORS NEEDED

 for the

VICTORY Tutorial Program

“Volunteers In Communities Tutoring Our Responsible Youth"

VICTORY'S mission is to provide individualized educational support for students in Grades 1 through 12 by promoting the development of academic skills, encouraging a positive self-concept, and involving the community in the education process.

VICTORY coordinates one-to-one volunteer tutoring matches to help youth-at-risk.  The program was created in 1982 at the CARVER BRANCH LIBRARY to give underachieving students from low income families extra scholastic assistance in reading and math to help them perform at grade level.  We are now available in seven branches of the Austin Library System.  (See below for listings)

VICTORY Program Specialists are on site during the tutorial hours of 3:30PM - 8:00PM

Monday through Thursday (during the AISD School calendar year) to support the tutor/student pairs and to provide the link between the student's parents as well as the student's school and the tutor's efforts.

We ask for a weekly commitment of one hour for one student for one semester.  We will have orientation/training for each tutor and be available for assistance during all tutoring sessions.  Volunteers are encouraged to apply at any time - no tutoring experience is required.

VICTORY is a partnership between the City of Austin and the Austin Independent School District linking volunteers with students at 7 branches of the Austin Public Library .

Monday ? Thursday, 3:30PM ? 8:00PM during the school year.

HEART FOR THE HOMELESS PATCH

Dear Girl Scout Leaders,
You'll be excited to hear about a new patch program called "A Heart for the Homeless" where Girl Scouts can learn about the issues facing homeless families in their communities and find out what they can do to help.
Click on the following link for a picture of the patch and all the details: <http://www.bridgecommunities.org/scoutpatch.htm>
Each year, an increasing number of families across
America struggle to find living wage jobs, and as a result more and more families find themselves experiencing episodic or chronic homelessness. Children are most acutely impacted by this experience.
For over 17 years, Bridge Communities, a non-profit organization based in the
Chicago area, has been helping homeless families cross the bridge from homelessness to self-sufficiency through their transitional housing program.
Please spread the word to service units and leaders in your Council that this patch program is available for use by any Girl Scout Troop or individual Girl Scout Juliette.
All of the information necessary to complete the patch program and order patches ($1 each) can be accessed from our website www.bridgecommunities.org <http://www.bridgecommunities.org/>.
If you have any questions or comments about this program, please contact me at the Bridge Communities office.
