FAMOUS VICTORIES

Over the years, the Shamrocks have won some terrific silverware. Here are some of the matches that have shaped the club's destiny and have taken their place in Shamrocks folklore for ever.

The First Championship....

On the brink of the Title

Templeville 0 - 1 Walsh Island Shamrocks

May 11th 1996...Dalton Park Mullingar. A team pictured before the game that would bring the first league Championship since 1971 to the Island. The Shamrocks had won five and drawn one of their last six league games to go joint top of the division and force a playoff for the title against Templeville, who three games before that, had only required a draw to win the championship outright. That game was on their home ground....... against Walsh Island. The Shamrocks won 1 - 0, and the rest, as they say, is History......

The Classic Cup Final.....

winning
the Double

Walsh Island Shamrocks 4 - 2 Bridge United
(After Extra time)
2-2 after 90 mins

May 19th 1996....Arlington. Winning a cup final to complete a double is an acheivement to treasure at all times, but when it is one of the best Finals ever seen in the Counties it makes it that bit more special. The Shamrocks held the psychological edge going into this game having come from behind to beat the Athy side in the quarter-finals of the Shield, but this was a new game and a new battle. The Islanders settled early and went 2-0 up before half-time through goals from Tommy and Daithi Duffy, but a resurgent Bridge United emerged in the second half and having pulled a goal back on 76 minutes, managed to snatch an equaliser three minutes into injury time. The Shamrocks were crestfallen at this late hammer blow but this side had a spirit and an inner belief that was unskakeable. They crushed Bridge with two excellent goals in each period of extra time from Jason Carroll and Paul Cox to lift the Cup, complete the Double and erase the memories of the Final, 12 months previously. Cup Finals do not get any better than this one......

The Treble

touching the treble

Walsh Island Shamrocks 2 - 0 Cill Beara Rovers

May 25th 1996...Arlington. The team pictured minutes before the Kick Off of the Shield Final and a game that would seal the place in Leinster Football League history, of the small club from Walsh Island. Two superb goals from Paul Cox and an accomplished all-round team performance, secured the Treble and absolutely cemented the reputation of this great Shamrocks side. It was a reputation that was to be formally acknowledged when the Leinster Football League bestowed a one-off 'Special Merit Award' on the club at their Annual Awards Ceremony two weeks later on 7th June 1996 at The Keadeen Hotel, Newbridge. It was the first, and only time, such an honour has been given to a club.

The Giffney Cup...

The finest Hour

Walsh Island Shamrocks 1 - 0 Cardiff Inn

'Cometh the hour, Cometh the Men....'. Dalymount Park....May 14th, 1997. The Finglas side may have come with pride in their new team suits, but the Men from Offaly came with a pride in the Red and Black Jersey and a hunger to win, that would drive them to fulfill their date with destiny. Losing was never considered.....because it was never an option.
A 7th minute Daithi Duffy goal and a sterling performance from the defence and midfield, ensured that this was going to be the Shamrock's finest hour. In one of the country's most famous grounds, they came, saw and Conquered.....
