SALOME JUG Canyoneering

According to Carolina, Salome Jug was "the best thing since 'pasturized processed american cheese food'"! Had it not been for the crazy 3 hour drive (1/2 of which was on dirt roads), we'd have been back the next day.

For this trip, hardcore canyoneer / mountaineer types David Gunn and Linda Locke were our guides and graciously provided all the rapelling equipment and drybags.

"Rappelling at Salome" Salome Wilderness, AZ

After a two mile hike toward Dutchwoman Butte, we dropped suddenly into the (seemingly small) Salome creekbed - and some very green water. Due to the unusually low water levels, the beginning was mostly wading and we started thinking that this kinda blew...
... but after only a short time of working our way down, we suddenly realized that the canyon walls were now towering forty feet above us. OyVeh!

A mile of swimming, wading, slipping, jumping, scrambling, falling, tripping, downclimbing, sliding, and more swimming brought us (finally) to the rappel station where David and Linda set up the rope. It was the first time we had ever rappeled on a single rope and we were so freaked out, we're still in therapy...
