We caught an amazing sunset leaving Crete! |
Erin's Crete Journals 5-10-02 Friday we were taking the night ferry to Santorini, so we spent the morning arranging for laundry (found a place where a lady would wash our stuff for us for about .50cents more than doing it ourselves!) and having our last good hotel breakfast. The plan was to do laundry and update our website as much as possible, so we took some pictures of Iraklion as we went down to the internet cafe we knew about. Once there, however, we had trouble getting into our website, and some trouble with the pc's themselves for accepting the software we needed for file transfer, etc. So the long and short of it is that we tried to update but weren't able to. We checked all our emails and edited the photos from Corfu, Athens and Crete, but weren't able to store them on the site to make photo pages. Sorry to all our friends back home who've been wanting updated pics! Finally we gave up and went off to have a couple of gyros in the park, then went to find a barber. Glenn had been going crazy with his 'long hair' for the past month, and I finally gave in and said it would be ok to cut it. It was only about an inch long (compared to his usual 1/4th inch length!!!), but he was miserable, and my curiosity had to give way to his comfort. So we wound up finding this funny little guy in a tiny hole in the wall shop, who didn't speak English and was a raving soccer fan. He clipped madly away at Glenn's hair and gave him back his sleek look, all the while having me approve the process. It was a fun experience. Much happier with his short 'do', Glenn was singing as we walked along to pick up our bags to go to the Santorini ferry. We lugged our heavy packs back down the hill to the port, and caught some amazing sunset photos from the deck of the ferry right before it sailed. It was cold out though, so we went inside as soon as the sun was down and fought to find some seats. A couple of nice girls from Canada let us share their table, so we sat and talked with them for the 4 hours until we arrived in Santorini around midnight. The port of Athinios is seated at the base of huge cliffs (we couldn't see any of this at night though), and once we found our hotel shuttle, it took a while to get up the long, switchback road up to the top. We couldn't see much beyond the road from the shuttle though, and were tired enough to go straight to bed once arriving at the hotel. |
