Glenn's Corfu Journals 4-29-02 The train to Brindisi left at 9:30 or so, so we had to get up early to have breakfast, shower and catch the train. Or we did not!!! O.K., so we slept in until 9:00 and caught the 11:15 train to Brindisi. What was the hurry??? Aren't we on vacation??? Anyway, we had determined that the boat to Corfu did not leave until 9:00 pm tonight. We finally awoke, showered, had breakfast, and caught the train to Brindisi. We arrived in Brindisi a little after 1:00 pm. Why do you ask would we catch a train that would get into town around 1:00 pm when we KNOW that everything closes between 1:00 pm and 4:30 pm every day? I am not sure, but sure enough as we entered town everything was closing up. We ended up walking towards the harbor and luckily passed a restaurant that was still open. We wasted our time away enjoying a pretty delicious pizza and sodas. We also found the local supermarket open so we bought some items for the overnight boat ride to Corfu (as we had been told that buying food or such on the boat would be expensive). Finally, around 4:30 pm, shops were starting to re-open. We found many stores selling boat tickets but we happened across one that had a room for 2 (economy) for 40 Euro's per person. We thought this worth the additional cost over the price of enjoying the deck for the evening, especially if we wanted to sleep at all. (The boat left at 9:00 pm and arrived in Corfu around 9:00 am the next day.) Plus we had not been on an overnight boat yet and didn't know what to expect. All we had to do now was meander down to the harbor, and catch the free shuttle around the harbor to the appropriate boat that would deliver us to Corfu in the morning. This was accomplished without a hitch as we made it to the boat around 7:30 pm. As we arrived at the harbor to check in for the boat, we met plenty of other backpackers that were heading in the same direction. Some were getting off at Igoumenitsa and the rest, like ourselves were getting off in Corfu. We met Nick and Laura, who happen to be traveling the world but in the opposite direction as ourselves. While they were about to depart to Asia and then on to Australia, we are heading back to Europe, then Africa, Australia, and Asia. We even shared email addresses and talked about catching back up in Australia or at least sharing stories upon completion of our trips. We also met Caroline, who was obviously from the South with the accent she twanged. Sure enough she was from South Carolina and traveling by herself. We enjoyed sharing stories of our current and past travels with them for most of the evening. We even had dinner on the boat which included a huge plate of spaghetti for myself and roast beef and potatoes for Erin. (Erin must still be craving MEAT!!!) The servings were huge but that may have had something to do with how empty the boat was. We continued to chat well into the evening until we all decided to call it a night and get some sleep before the early morning wake up call. |
