5-16-02, Part 2

Let me give you a little insight into getting around Positano. Positano is built on the side of a huge cliff along the ocean. This means that everywhere you walk you are either walking uphill or downhill. There is no flat land to speak of unless you are walking along the beach front itself. The walk down to the town prepared us very little for the days ahead. They did have an orange bus that ran around the city but that cost money and we are young, right!!!

The trek to find an internet cafe was based on the fact that we had friends flying in from Seattle that we were trying to make arrangements to see while in Italy. Jana and Ray had flown into Napoli and were staying in Sorrento for a few days. We had been in Sorrento on Wednesday and Thursday morning and they didn't arrive into Sorrento until Thursday night. Their schedule included Pompeii on Friday and Positano on Saturday, but like ours, was open to change as opportunities developed. We were heading to the internet cafe to see if they had arrived and to let them know where we were staying for the next few days, just in case we could cross paths. We also thought that if we could find a decent place then we would work on the web-site for a while. We walked into town and found the internet cafe / bar nearest the beach. The price was 6 Euro's per hour and they would not allow us to hook up our peripheral equipment. They were nice enough to tell us about another place up the hill that may allow us to hook up. So off we were, up the hill better than a kilometer away in a little shop that we would not have recognized if someone had not pointed it out to us. We entered only to find the price at 7,75 Euro's per hour, in which we quickly decided that was more than we were willing to spend (We were spending 2 Euro's per hour at the Internet Train in Florence & Rome). We stepped back on to the road we had taken to continue our way around back to the hostel.

We walked a little farther along the road until we were both exhausted. The difficulty was that we were both hungry and exhausted and we had no idea how much farther we had to go to arrive at the hostel. We broke down and climbed on to an orange bus that dropped us off near the hostel. We then proceeded down the stairs to find dinner at a restaurant that we had seen earlier that day. (We should have stayed on the bus as it drove right by where we ended up eating.) We had a very enjoyable dinner with our usual of pasta and wine, and Erin even had some tiramisu for dessert. After dinner we walked back up the very steep stairs back to the hostel. No worries as we had arrived back around 10:00 pm where we sat on the balcony chatting with a group of travelers from all over. Erin crashed early while I stayed up and chatted until around midnight when the concensus was to "hit the hay".
