Glenn's Cinque Terre Journals 5-26-02 Sunday morning and the day was a little overcast but clearing. The other big event that I didn't mention on Saturday was that we finally bought a bowl. Now this was a big deal as we could now have cereal for breakfast. Yeah!!! We also bought some cereal and milk the day before so we had cereal for breakfast for the first time in a long time. After breakfast the plan was to hike from Vernazza to Corniglia which was listed as a 2 hour hike, not as hard as the hike to Monterosso but with more spectacular views. Erin was worn out from the day before and decided to stay around town today. I decided to go on the hike by myself today. I took off around mid day, enjoying the views (I took the camera today) and ended up in Corniglia about 1 1/2 hours later. The hike started in the same way as yesterday but you had more time on level ground and downhill. Corniglia was another cute little town where I spent time enjoying the port area and looking around town at the local shops. I caught the next train back to Vernazza and arrived home around 5:00 pm. I found Erin sitting on a park bench in the plaza reading a book. We relaxed for a while in the plaza before cleaning up for dinner. The day was clouding over by this time and the locals were pulling their boats from the water in anticipation for a storm to come in tonight. The boats are moored along a breaker wall and instead of having them get beat against the wall they stored them in the plaza area. We watched as different teams of men came out to use the electrical pulley located in the plaza area. By the end of the night most of the boats (all except 1) had been relocated to the plaza area or moored away from the retaining wall. The plaza was full of boats by now. Erin had also checked e-mail and had received an e-mail from Jana and Ray (our friends from Seattle) that they would be arriving in Vernazza around 1:00 pm tomorrow (Monday). That was good news as we had been trying unsuccessfully to catch up with each other while they were in Italy. We then went out to dinner at a restaurant up the hill towards the castle. We finished dinner around 11:00 pm (we are getting used to eating late), strolled back through the plaza and back to our place. We enjoyed the stars and moon that popped out between all of the storm clouds. We ended the day around midnight. We needed a good nights sleep as Monday night and Tuesday were travel days to Barcelona!!! |
