2009 Schedule Analysis The pool schedule for the 2009 Heartland Championship hsa just been released and bears good news for Wanganui with 2007 champs North Otago and Lochore Cup holder Poverty Bay avoided in the first round. Once again the season starts with the visit of East Coast, whose struggles as a union continued last year and included a thumping at the hands of the Butcher Boys. Then it is off to Masterton for what promises to be a tough game against Wairarapa Bush which underperformed amid team-building issues last year. Week 3 sees us back home against Horowhenua-Kapiti, a key fixture that has tended to go the Butcher Boys way in recent years with some comfortable victories. Week 4 is a potential banana skin in the form of a Buller side in Westport where Wanganui has struggled to win in recent years, with a game at home against West Coast - beaten comfortably twice in 2008 - to finish the pool. All-in-all probably as good a schedule as could be expected with a couple of tough away matches balanced by 3 at home that are emininently winnable. As ever, much will depend on who we have returning from the perfect side of last year and the shifting sands in other unions, but with champion coach Guy Lennox back in the saddle after a successful Heartland excursion with some of the boys, Wanganui fans can look with confidence towards another strong Meads Cup run. Pool A Schedule (home games unless indicated) EC (29 Aug), WB Masterton (5 Sep), HK (12 Sep) , Buller Westport (19 Sep), WC (26 Sep) Radio coverage of all broadcast games will be carried live at Butcherboy TV |
