Dewey Decimal
Classification
Welcome to
our wonderful library, and welcome to join us to learn the Dewey Classification
System. You will become a more effective user of our library and will be more
successful in your study. Congratulations!
Project
Goals:
1.
Students will be able to search and gather information from resources cataloged
via Dewey Decimal System, from our school media center.
2.
Students will be able to use the system to catalog books at third Dewey summary
level.
3.
Students to practice to express themselves / present their works in front of
the class.
4.
Students to learn to work in groups.
Timeline: Three 42-minute periods
Assessment: Students will be graded by the grading rubric,
which counts the students participation and group representing and shelving.
LESSON
No. 1
Activities:
A).
The whole class will have a tour in the school media center, to have a
general idea on how the books in the library are organized by Dewey system.
B).
Break the class to groups, 4 students per group. Each group votes a
group leader who is responsible to report to the teacher. Each group will be
assigned to a color code. Identify yourself on which group you are in.

Homework assignment for Lesson No. 1:
Each
group finds at least six non-fiction, not cataloged books, and tries to catalog
them to third summary level on Dewey System. Prepare the group presentation
REQUIREMENT ON Group presentation:
• Each group will present their work in front of
class during lesson No. 3 and receive a grade following the “Grading Rubric”. Each presentation should include at least six books, show how you did it and all the resources used.
Each presentation should not shorter than 4 minutes and not longer than 8
minutes.
• Each group will shelf the books they cataloged,
with a special mark has their group name on it, provided by the library teacher, to the library collections right after they have done their
presentation.

Activities:
• Please
continue and finish your Dewey lesson, then start work on your book cataloging
and presentation. Go back to the lesson and other related sites as needed. Ask
your library teacher any time.
• Please
arrange an order of group presentation
for tomorrow.

Activities:
1.
Students will present your works in groups
in front of the class.

As the presentations are going on,
• The group leader of each
group hand in the list of books they cataloged to your
library teacher
• Each group
will shelf the books they
cataloged, with color-coded marks of their groups provided by your library
teacher to the library collections right after you have done your presentation.
• Every one fill in the feed-back sheet. The group leaders collect them and give them to your
library teacher.
