As we learn to trust the universe... we may find that she has a great sense of humor... -Awilda Aponte-

those large blinking eyes
through the thick glasses
searching to pick up the pieces
or patches
for the quilt was going to be a great one!
"Does this color look good, or that one?"
" I think this one" I answer.
She nods

And now I view the quilt
through blurred eyes
draped over her coffin
dad stands so rigid
like a statue
still be her side
just as in her life, her sickness
and now in death

these hands
large and gentle
and delicate
these hands
sand sifting through
my fingers I could not save her
not in her life, her sickness
and now in death

please forgive me mom
please forgive me
please
paul
please forgive
yourself
