Go Vegan!

"Veganism:

Better for the You,

Better for the World,

Better for the Environment,

What kind of a choice is that?"

Different Types of Vegetarians:

Semivegetarians Do not eat red meat.  However, they do eat seafood and poultry.
Vegetarians No types of Animal Flesh.
Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian A person who eats no meat, fish, fowl or animal byproducts (such as gelatin), or products containing them. An ovo-lacto vegetarian does, however, eat eggs and dairy products.
Lacto Vegetarian A person who eats no meat, fish, fowl, animal byproducts (such as gelatin), or eggs, but does eat dairy products
Ovo Vegetarian A person who eats no meat, fish, fowl, animal byproducts (such as gelatin), or dairy products, but does eat eggs
Dietary Vegan Follows a Vegan diet, but doesn’t exclude non-food animal products.
Vegan Excludes Animal Flesh (Meat, Poultry, and Seafood), Also excludes Animal Products (eggs, Milk, Dairy, Honey), And the use of any animal products (Leather, Fur, Gelatin, silk, wool) Most Vegans Don't allow the use of honey. But a few "Vegans" still use honey. Some vegans also choose to not eat yeast products.

"If Slaughterhouses Had Glass Walls the whole world would be vegetarians"

Animals in slaughterhouses can hear those ahead of them being shackled and killed, can smell the stench, and can sometimes see the slaughter. All animals fight for their lives and struggle with their remaining strength to get away.

"We are the lucky ones - we are not standing day after day in a tiny space, breathing the stench of our own waste, waiting only to be slaughtered. We must do everything possible for those suffering lives of pain and terror."

- Matt Ball, Vegan Outreach Co-founder

Some people are Vegans or Vegetarians for health reasons only. In the words of nutritional expert Michael Klaper, M.D., "Your body has absolutely no nutritional requirement for the flesh or milk of other animals." All requirements can be obtained through non-animal sources.

The meat, dairy, and egg industries don't tell us:

The diseases which are commonly prevented, consistently improved, and sometimes cured by low-fat vegetarian diet include:

Strokes Heart disease Kidney stones
Breast cancer Prostate cancer Pancreatic cancer
Cervical cancer Stomach cancer Diabetes
Hypoglycemia Peptic ulcers Constipation
Hiatal hernias Diverticulosis Gallstones
Hypertension Salmonellosis Trichinosis
Osteoporosis Colon cancer Ovarian cancer
Endometrial cancer Kidney disease Hemorrhoids
Obesity Asthma Irritable colon syndrome

"I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men." - Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519)

Did you Know...

ü Over 100 million cows, pigs, and sheep are raised and slaughtered in the United States alone each year.

ü Over 5 Billion Poultry die each year.

ü Pus patties, anyone? Government inspectors recently told reporters that students in 31 states were served chicken nuggets made from birds covered with pus, bruises, tumors, or scabs. Want barbecue sauce with that?

ü If you become a vegetarian you will be saving at least 1000 animals in your lifetime.

ü If Americans reduced their meat consumption by 10% enough grain would be freed (12000 tons) to feed 60,000,000 people- the population of Great Britian.

ü If all Americans became vegetarian enough grain would be freed to feed 600,000,000 people- the population of India.

ü A child dies of starvation somewhere in the world, every 3 seconds.

ü If they continue to clear American forests to raise cattle at the present rate, in 50 years there will be none left.

ü From 1966-1983, 38% of the Amazon rain forest was destroyed for cattle grazing.

ü An inch of topsoil takes 200-1000 years to develop - yet in the USA they have lost around 1/3 of their prime topsoil in 200 years (around 7 inches) due to animal farming.

ü 25 gallons of water is needed to make 1lb of wheat, but it takes 2500 gallons to produce 1lb of meat.

ü The water needed to make 10 lbs of steak is equal to an average household's consumption of water in an entire year.

ü Enough petrol is used by a family of four eating beef for a year, to run a car for about 6 months.

ü 70% of all grain is used to feed animals.

ü Fishers who use drift or other modern nets, kill millions of sea animals and disrupt the sea bed. Fishermens' nets kill about 10 times as many other animals as the ones they are trying to catch.

ü 15,000,000,000 land animals are slaughtered every year for food, and an unknown but much larger number of sea animals (including thousands of dolphins caught accidentally) are killed.

ü Several chickens are stuffed into battery cages together, unable to even spread their wings and often not able to stand up. 95% of poultry suffer from injury before being killed.

ü Every year, millions of male chicks are gassed or pulped because they can not lay eggs, while their sisters go to the battery sheds.

ü Chicks are debeaked without anesthetic so they won't hurt each other in the unnaturally tight confines they're kept in. To us, this would be like having our fingernails pulled out without anesthetic.

ü Cows naturally produce 5 liters of milk per day for their calves, but under the systems of modern farming are made to produce 25-40 liters a day. This results in swollen & inflamed udders, and they are soon worn out. Cows naturally live up to 20 years, but are slaughtered at 5-7 years when their milk production begins to fall.

ü Cows only give milk for 10 months after they have a calf, so they are routinely artificially inseminated (or mechanically raped) to keep them pregnant and milking. Their calves are taken away, usually at 12 hours old, for meat or export to veal crates.

ü Vegetarians have a 20% lower rate of mortality from all causes (meaning they live longer & don't get sick as often).

ü Vegetarians are 40% less likely to get of cancer than meat-eaters. This is thought to be because they have a higher intake of vitamins A, C & E.

ü Osteoporosis (due to calcium loss from bones) is mainly due to the sulphur content in meat & casein protein in milk that cause calcium to be lost in the urine.

ü Average Lifespan of a Chicken: 20 Years .  Average Lifespan of a Factory Farmed Chicken: 7 Weeks .

A Chicken’s Life

"We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. True humanity does not allow us to impose such sufferings on them. It is our duty to make the whole world recognize it. Until we extend our circle of compassion to all living things, humanity will not find peace."
