MORNINGSIDE HIGH SCHOOL, Morningside, Port Elizabeth

Afrikaanse blasoen

Morningside High

The school is a co-educational, English-medium institution with classes from Grades 1 to 12 (Sub A to Std 10). Its change of name from Chinese High School was approved by the Eastern Cape Education Department on 7 January 1998. The arms were registered by the Bureau of Heraldry in June 1998 and are blazoned:

Gules, an eagle rizant or, clutching in its talons a triquetra argent, and in chief a sun or; a bordure per bordure, azure and argent.

Motto: Fides et virtus.

As Chinese High, the school’s arms incorporated a sun in the style of the flags of the Republic of China and of the Chinese National Party or Kuomintang. The sun in the new arms (no longer in the style of the Kuomintang) represents the purpose of education which is enlightenment and development. The colour blue is said to represent loftiness and greatness.

The eagle represents courage, and the triquetra in the base (its position representing it as the foundation on which the school is based) represents the Holy Trinity. It also represents the importance of the relationship between teacher, parent and child.

The motto, meaning “Faith and courage”, is unchanged from that of Chinese High School.

The school, with classes from Grade 1 to Grade 12, occupies the buildings of the Chinese High School in Topaz Road, Morningside (allotment area Parsons Vlei).

The school governing body decided on the change of name because the majority of the pupils were no longer Chinese, and also because they wanted it to have the name of the township where the school is situated.

Afrikaanse blasoen:
