Background:
In service to his Daimyo, he fell in love with his lord's youngest daughter Yamamoto ChiyoMori. His lord looked upon this romance with approval as Ken was an exemplary warrior in his behavior and technique. Ever since the loss of Ken's parents while Ken was a boy, Ken was almost like a son to the older man.
On the day of Ken and Chiyo's wedding, disaster struck. Before the vows could be exchanged, a large band of Oni attacked the wedding party. Fortunately, few were hurt. Unfortunately, those few were Chiyo's older brothers.
As the eldest child, it was now her duty to become Daimyo and marry for political reasons. Ken still served and became one of Chiyo's most trusted advisors, but neither acted on the feelings that still existed between them.
After a year of this, Chiyo's father called Ken to him and charged him with a mission. The Daimyo's mystics had found out about the four horsemen. He decided that this must be investigated and elected to send Ken. Ken knew this was a mission he was not meant to return from when he saw the unshed tears in both his Daimyo's and his true love's eyes. He accepted the mission, bowed deeply, turned, and left.
He followed the mystics instructions and had a shifter open a rift to take him near to the Gathering of Heroes... or, at least, that was the intention.
