Disclaimer.

Though I make reference to many Games Workshop copyrighted words and phrases, I make no pretence at ownership and do not seek any profit from their usage. The system is a substantial update and expansion of the advanced mission generator (Chapter Approved compilation 1) and Rules of engagement (White Dwarf article).

Table of contents

    • A Campaign and event system for Warhammer 40k.
    • A system to create credible scenarios for the outbreak of war between specific enemies.
    • Reworked night fighting rules.
    • A new skirmish level game.
    • Extensive fluff article about the army of the Black Tabernacle.Who or what is HOG 8 ?
    • Guidelines for tunnel and trench fighting.
    • Get in touch, or leave a message.
    • Coming soon, a full battle report.
    • Also coming soon, additional objectives within existing missions.
    • A recommendation, if I may. There are examples of different parts of the system available below. The actual documents (the mechanisms) are quite long, but are mainly definitions of results. It is not necessary to read it all to understand. The examples are all short and make the most sense if read in the following order. 1st, the war generator, 2nd, the secondary objectives example and finally the full campaign turn.
    • An errata/correction/query/update for the campaign and event system.
    • I have been told that some links do not work in firefox (thank you killmaimburn of Warseer fame). I haven't been able to fix it, no computer whizz kid me. Everything works fine in IE 6. If you have any problems, feel free to get in touch with me at Warseer (see feedback, below). If you want the pdf's, I will get them to you. Thanks, Jubilex.

The Campaign and event generator.

So, what's all this about then and do I need it?

Well, if you like the sound of the following, then the system could well be for you. Do you want -

    • A system that links your games of Warhammer 40k into an ongoing storyline?
    • To have interpretations of mission success / failure and consequences that affect subsequent games?
    • To have occasional unusual events and battlefield conditions told from the point of view of individual armies? Orks and Daemon Hunters see things somewhat differently, you know.
    • To know just what (or who) you are to rescue / loot / or sabotage? Do you want the consequences of success / failure to loom large in subsequent games? In other words, do you want your games to mean something other than just a win / loss?
    • To have your battlefields named and have terrain themed? Would you prefer to play a breakout mission or the breakout from the Yabelo Valley?
    • Now, this is a big question because it really does change the dynamic of the game. Would you like to have each force, while they are attempting to win the battle (the mission), have secondary objectives to complete? Secret missions they are attempting to achieve during the battle? These battles tend to be real nail biters, as you don't know what your enemy is up to, you have to figure it out for yourself!

For an example of these secondary missions at work (1 page) click here.

You can download a copy of the Campaign and Event System (19 pages) here.

There is a version of the secondary objectives system, independant of the campaign system here.

The War generator.

Right, so now you have access to the nuts and bolts of the campaign system and you are ready to go. But, there are a few more details yet to be explored. Some gamers are not that bothered about why their armies are fighting a certain foe, while others agonise about these why's and wherefores for ages. The War generator is intended to bring these two camps a little closer together. It won't tell you all the ins and outs of what is going on, but it will give you the bare bones and is offered as an encouragement to your imagination to further develop the storyline.

If the following appeals to you, check out the war generator.

    • Compare specific armies and determine credible reasons for them to be at war.
    • Explain away potential "problem" conflicts, such as Space Marines vs. Imperial Guard.
    • Link the cause for the outbreak of war with the last game in the series. In other words, one of the forces will get to attempt to do exactly what they intended at the outbreak.

For an example of the War generator at work (1 page)click here.

You can download a copy of the War generator (11 pages) here.

Would you like an example of a full campaign turn? This uses the full rules set and is 2 pages. If so, click here.

All downloads are pdf files. To read them you will need Adobe Acrobat. You can download it (for Windows) here.

Rules supplements and house rules.

During play testing for the campaign system, it became apparent that more night fights were generated than before. This happened because it is possible to have night fight rules in play during other missions. It highlighted (is that the right word?) how weak these rules are. So, if you like the following ideas, check out Illuminati.

    • Different degrees of aquirement from spotted to illuminated.
    • Alternative rules for searchlights.
    • The use of flares. No expense necessary, certain types of troops are assumed to be equipped with them.
    • Vehicles and buildings on fire.

You can download a copy of Illuminati (2 pages)here.

Another interesting idea came up a while ago that it would be cool to have (small) armies of individuals fighting it out. Its a combination of 40k and Necromunda (2 pages).

Guidelines (a work in progress) for this can be found in Warhammer 40(s)kirmish.

After some chat with grimdakka on warseer, I have put together a couple of house rules additions. A combo of Grims stuff and mine on Tunnel fighting can be found here. Updated 12.6.07. There are scenarios and special rules for trench warfare if you click here.

The army of the Black Tabernacle.

G.V.

This is included here for those of you who like fluff (or background) material. It is one of my armies and I have written pretty extensive background for it (12 pages text and pictures as of now). Its an unusual force and contains many custom vehicles and one troop type very rarely encountered. I have presented it in the form of a gazeteer to a (quite) recently discovered planet. There is text on Terrasque's discovery, it's commerce and population (watch out for the mutant slave gang levy manning the methane farms!) and its military. The unique vehicles of the HOG's (Heavy Ordnance Groups) are detailed including the RAT's and the GATOR's as is the real power behind the throne! It is presented as a story, so resist the temptation to scroll down to lovely colourful pictures, the reality of what this army is and where it's allegiances lie is slowly revealed.

If you would like to find out just what sparked off operation San Lucien and wish to learn the fate of HOG 8, you can check out the army of the Black Tabernacle at the logic stack here. A word of warning, do not, under any circumstances, attempt to identify the other viewer. You have been warned!

There is an army list for the Army of the Black Tabernacle along with a breif tactica. You can download it here.

These wargamers are triumphant (TWAT).

Here are a few pics of some of our minis. Not many at the moment, but I will be adding more soon as we get photobuket accounts (and if I can afford the batteries).

This is jubilex's d-cannon battery, warpstalker farseer transport tank and swooping hawks. There is an album of my Swordwind eldar here.

Feedback.

If you want to get in touch, I am a regular at Warseer, recommend it for all things 40k if you haven't been there. My user name is Jubilex. Warseer is here.

All constructive criticism and input will be welcomed. Of particular interest to us is which parts of the system you use (or at least intend to) and any parts of it you don't like, think are unbalancing or whatever. Please understand though, that these are the rules we use and by publishing this web page, we are sharing them with you. We are not trying to create a product that will appeal to everyone. Any input that would improve the system will be most welcomed (and may, or may not be incorporated, but only with your permission, you will be credited). So if you don't have something constructive to say, please don't bother. What's this?.

One matter of interest is errata. There are bound to be errors here that I will iron out with the help of anyone who is interestd. What do you think would be the best way to present this material? To update the pdf's or to set up a seperate file? In other words, something to paste into the static pdf.

Personally, I am always interested in "fluffy" armies (have you checked out the Black Tabernacle fluff?) and will always welcome such material.

Any updates/errata/corrections/queries will be dealt with here.

Last updated 24 04 07.

Updates so far...Trophy problem fixed. Ommitted new missions, guidelines. Cleanse within normal "long table edge" mission strangeness sorted. Illuminati alterations. New guidelines for trench and tunnel warfare.

Thanks for your interest and may you never roll another 1 (except Necron Master! You know who you are!! Stargod!!! Oh shameful one!!!!).
