 Into the Woods Episode 11 When strange lights in the night sky outside Roswell suggest an extraterrestrial landing, the aliens and Sheriff Valenti each strive to be the first to find the landing site. Liz’s father, Jeff, enters the back room of the Crashdown and tells Liz that he is really looking forward to the annual Fathers’ Camping Weekend. Liz tries to let him down gently by mentioning that not many fathers he knows are still going. They are interrupted by Milton, who bursts in and reveals that there has just been an alien sighting in Frasier Woods, just outside of town. The next day, Milton points out to Max the exact location of the sighting on a map. It turns out to be near the Indian reservation that a big flash of light was reported by several witnesses, the most reliable being fly fisherman Rocky Calhoun. In the sheriff’s office, Rocky is reluctant to tell Valenti any details, not wanting to be thought of as a nut who sees spacemen. When Valenti promises to keep the information confidential, Rocky confides that it was a white hot light, similar to an x-ray. At school, the aliens gather in the Eraser Room. Max tells Isabel and Michael that the sheriff has closed off the area of Frasier Woods surrounding the sighting. A flyer promoting the upcoming Fathers’ Camping Weekend gives them an idea of how they can check out the area without arousing suspicion because the campout is very near the sighting. At the Parker house, Liz and Jeff also decide to go on the campout, as Liz cannot bear to let her father down. In Michael’s trailer, his father is suggesting that he add beer to his cereal for dinner when Michael spots River Dog in the distance. Going out to see him, Michael learns from River Dog that the sighting was real. Back at the sheriff’s office, Kyle waits for his father so that they can go pick out a new tent for the camping weekend. Valenti arrives and explains that because the press caught wind of the sighting he must rush the search. Therefore, he will call Kyle’s coach and have him look out for Kyle on the trip. Max, Michael and Isabel share a booth at the Crashdown where Michael reveals what River Dog told him. He goes on to surmise that, instead of River Dog having known the fourth alien, he might actually be him. Isabel and Max gently dismiss the notion. As the camping group gathers in the high school parking lot, Max and Isabel’s father, Philip, is glad to see his kids joining in on activities. At the last minute, Valenti shows up and takes over for the coach. A look of understanding comes over him when he spots Max. Talking into his cell phone, Valenti tells his deputy to put extra men around the perimeter of the sighting. At the Frasier Woods campground, Max and Isabel pick a fire pit near the woods in order to facilitate their escape that night. Valenti also notices the Evans’ site and picks one nearby. It suddenly dawns on Kyle why his father wanted to go camping when he invites the Parkers over to join the party. As everyone prepares to go to sleep, Liz tells Max that she knows why he is there and she wants to come with him when he checks out the sighting. Liz returns to her tent and takes her sleeping bag outside to be with Maria. Out of the corner of her eye Liz sees Max and Isabel stealthily creep toward the forest. Liz follows and is soon detected by them. Maria comes up behind the trio and they all agree to go to the sighting together. Michael and River Dog approach the sighting area from a different direction. When River Dog tells him that he is like the fourth alien, Michael uses the opportunity to confront River Dog with his suspicion that he actually is the fourth alien. Suddenly, River Dog trips over a branch and hurts his ankle. When he is unable to heal himself, Michael realizes that the Native American is not his father and uses his power to fix River Dog’s ankle. Back at the campground, Jeff discovers that Liz is missing and initiates a search. A search party soon appears on the trail of the four teenagers. Liz and Maria stay back as decoys and allow themselves to be found while Max and Isabel continue their quest. The two aliens come to a cave opening, followed at some distance by Valenti, who is surprised when Kyle comes up behind him, wanting to find out what is more important to his father than he is. Michael and River Dog join Max and Isabel as they stand in the middle of the symbol from the cave painting, this time burned into the ground. River Dog tells them that the white light created the symbol, which is a sign meaning that the fourth alien is back. Valenti walks out of the woods toward the group. Max crouches down by the sign and when Valenti gets there, nothing remains on the ground but dust and pine needles. Later, the sheriff goes to a nursing home to visit his father for the first time in many years. The elder Valenti struggles to bring food to his mouth as his son apologizes and tells him that he was right all along. |
