Liz and Max cut class to enjoy a beautiful drive along an old, winding one lane highway. Suddenly, a deer jumps in front of Max’s Jeep and, swerving to avoid it, Max plummets into a ravine. In the aftermath of the crash, a disoriented but unhurt Liz is frightened to see Max slumped over the steering wheel, unconscious and bleeding.

In the emergency room of the local hospital, a paramedic tells Liz that Max’s vital signs are strong. After Max is lifted onto a hospital bed, Liz notices a young nurse, Susan, preparing a hypodermic needle for a blood sample. Liz assesses the situation, daunted. Help arrives in the form of Michael and Isabel. They all watch as blood is drawn from the needle into a tube. Isabel goes to Max’s side while Michael intently watches Susan seal the tube of blood. Michael begins to charm her as she makes her way out of Max’s room.

Back at school, Mr. Bruckner, the principal, informs Topolsky that Max has been in an accident. Recognizing an opportunity, Topolsky orders Agent Moss over to the hospital. After the nurse leaves, Isabel and Liz discuss the situation. Isabel tells her that they never get sick and, thus, have not previously faced this predicament. She wants to replace Max’s blood with Liz’s, but, calling on her biology training, Liz tells her that the testosterone level would prevent female blood from passing as male blood. They call Maria, who is still at school, and she convinces Alex to come to the hospital with her.

At the blood lab, Susan puts Max’s blood sample in a holder with several other tubes. In Max’s room, Alex is filled with shock and reservations when he learns that his friends want his blood. Liz promises to explain everything later while Isabel uses her powers to laser into Alex’s skin and get a blood sample as he looks away.

Back in the blood lab, Michael resumes his attempt to charm the nurse, while Liz discreetly enters and hands him Alex’s fake blood sample. When Michael asks Susan out on a date, she is flustered and he uses this opportunity to surreptitiously replace Max’s blood with Alex’s fake sample. After the students reconvene in the waiting room, Alex takes offense when Liz asks him to leave without the promised explanation. Alex guesses that the problem is drugs and Liz, with great difficulty, confirms his suspicion. Feeling even more troubled than before, Alex walks out.

Meanwhile, Max has made a miraculous recovery and the doctors release him. As they are about to leave, Michael goes back to Max’s room to retrieve Maria’s purse and discovers Agents Moss and Baxter going through the trash and reading Max’s chart. Michael masks his recognition of the men and pretends nothing is wrong.

That night at the Evans house, Michael tells Isabel and Max about recognizing the agents from the time they had previously followed him. The aliens decide to turn the tables. Across town, Moss meets with Topolsky and tells her that the group brought in Alex and he suspects that they may have switched blood samples.

The next day, Max and Liz go to the UFO Center and enter its video theater. In the darkened room, they disappear behind some displays while Moss tries to locate them. Realizing that he has lost his subjects, Moss exits the building, with Maria, Michael and Isabel in the Jetta trailing him. They follow him to the Tumbleweed Motel and, when Moss leaves, Michael uses his powers to break in. Thanks to Maria’s kibitzing, they find a phone number. They dial it and are shocked to hear Topolsky’s voice on the other end.

After they hang up without saying anything, Topolsky goes into the cafeteria and tries to befriend Alex. When he is not looking, Topolsky drops a small tablet into his soda cup. After she leaves, Alex’s nose begins to bleed and he stops it with some paper towels from the bathroom. When Alex heads to class, Topolsky grabs the paper towels from the trash and puts them in a zip lock bag.

Later, she confronts him with her knowledge of his faking the blood test. Topolsky tells him that Max is dangerous and she asks him to confess everything. Having been pushed too far, Alex heads for the door. Safely outside Topolsky’s office, Alex runs into Max. Afraid of Max and yet taken aback by his gratitude, Alex informs him that Topolsky knows about the blood switch.

That afternoon at the Crashdown, Liz meets with Alex and begs him for a favor based on their friendship. Alex returns to school and meets with Topolsky. When he begins to tell her about drugs, she realizes that he may not know what is actually going on with Max. Liz enters Topolsky’s office and asks to speak with her privately.
