I am currently working on the Farve Project.  It is an attempt to create a world and an intelligent entity within that world, both implemented in software.  Such an entity is called an Animat.  The Farve implementation of a world and the animat is different from the usual implementations in 2 respects: The virtual environment maintained by Farve is totally abstract, and the designer can create it with exquisite complexity, because it is mathematics based.

Secondly, the actual animat, implemented by the Farve software as the iModule (Intelligence Module), will consist of an equally exquisitely complex nervous system, which will result in never-before seen software animat intelligence.

Welcome to my website.  I am a personal researcher and developer of Artificial Intelligence.  This is where I make my work available for anyone who is interrested in this very fascinating field.

Where the artificial cockroach animat as created by Beer (R.D. Beer.  Intelligence as Adaptive Behaviour: an experiment in computational neuroethology.  Academic Press 1990) consisted of a few neurons and made use of relatively simple, pre-coded interactions between them, the iModule will display complexity and adaptibility POSSIBLY beyond anything previously seen in such a software implementation.  For example, the diagram below implements a single Farve-specific EMD (Elementary Motion Detector), that exhibits adapted-direction selectivity, and spatial frequency inconsistency responce.  (For an explanation, see ADS EMcD).  This is simply one of many such computational structures the Farve iModule will make use of in it’s computational architecture.

So, with the goal to create a truly adaptive Animat, capable of adapting to very diverse stimuli patterns, and capable of integrating the nature of those adaptations into it’s own needs, I start The Farve Project.  May we (myself and the people who give me advice) succeed in creating this next-generation Animat.

Announcement (28 April 2002): The Farve Project has a new home. Visit it here.
