| GUIDELINES FOR REPORTING & AUTHENTICATING "VISIONS" OF THE HOLY MOTHER Updated: 2/15/05 This excerpt was taken from the Marion webpage. Keep in mind, of course, that these guidelines are the current "standard" for the Catholic Church's authenticating the Holy Mother's appearance & message. If, in the case of the Fatima Vision, the Catholic Church in its wisdom deems the message "too overwhelming" to be delivered to the human spirit of the 'faithful' The Holy See will suppress that information. [Note: Many believe The Catholic Church suppressed the total message of the 1900 vision at Fatima because of its "overwhelming" content. The fulfillment, then, of the 3rd Secret of Fatima--the meteor hit on 12/24/06 and subsequent 9.2 pt. quake setting off the tsunami and "dominoe effect" of plate tectonic movements we are seeing even today (2/03/06) in places as removed from Sumatra as Pakistan, Figii Islands, Japan and soon the U.S. west coast is most probably the "mechanism" by which the Tribulation Period predicted in Revelations (King James Bible). This belief is founded upon Sister Lucia's statement from her own lips that: "I will live to see the 3rd Secret of Fatima fulfilled." Being that Sister Lucia died 3 weeks following the Sumatra quake and tsunami--and that this single event was the most amazing geological event of the 20th century--one can certainly compute that this was the remarkable event for which she clung to life in ill health for many of the last years she lived to witness. This, also, was the position taken by David Booth--although he did NOT state this at the time of the Merklinger interview. Not surprisingly, Mr. Booth himself, has fallen into grave illness following the revelation. Update 2/03/06] Of the handful of Marian apparitions that have been accepted as authentic, there are several common characteristics that stand out: the visionaries usually dislike the attention focused on them and the events surrounding the apparitions. the visionaries are usually young, quite normal and not particularly well-educated. They wouldn't be picked out as being especially holy or spiritual prior to the vision. the apparitions tend to occur in isolated and quiet places, usually when religious beliefs are under attack, invoking memories of Bethlehem. the visionaries never expected the visions received; the visions start as a complete surprise. the visionaries are warned by the Blessed Virgin that they won't be happy in this life. the visionaries give explicitly consistent stories of the contents of their visions. They don't contradict themselves no matter how much later in life they are asked about their visions. the messages given in the visions call for increased prayer, repentance and penance. the apparitions are accompanied or immediately followed by extraordinary events that are totally inexplicable. Spontaneous cures of terminal diseases are typical of one type of inexplicable event observed. Apparitions that fall outside the range of these observations are more difficult to assess by scientific and religious authorities and therefore take much longer to evaluate. Further, in post-modern western civilization, events such as Marian apparitions are typically held to be superstitious throwbacks to a less enlightened time. More of the previously inexplicable can now be explained by science, thus making the truly miraculous more difficult to discern and time-consuming to document. Patience is necessary in evaluating private revelations such as the appearances of Mary since there is a high probability that any such event is likely to be the result of wishful thinking or worse. One example of this cautious and time-consuming approach can be seen in the aftermath of the appearance of the Blessed Virgin at Lourdes, France to Bernadette Soubrous in 1858. There were more than 150 alleged Marian apparitions in the five years following Mary's appearance at Lourdes in Europe alone. NONE of these were ever authenticated after subsequent investigation and analysis. The Catholic Church, to protect itself and its members, evaluates private revelations very carefully. In general, private revelations fall into four groupings: Questionable - every alleged apparition event starts in this category. Nothing is assumed to be occurring until a thorough evaluation takes place. False - after evaluation, almost all questionable apparitions are determined to be "false alarms" even though the individuals involved are determined to be mentally healthy and appear sincere in their statements and beliefs. Fraudulent - a few alleged apparitions have been faked for monetary reasons or by individuals seeking publicity and attention. On other occassions, there has been an element of satanic involvement uncovered. The most notorious such case of this is Magdelaine of the Cross. She could levitate while "praying". fortell the future and heal the sick. Despite these phenomena, it turns out that on her death bed Madelaine confessed that she had given herself to Satan while still a young girl. Authentic - a select few private revelations are determined to be authentic in that they appear to involve supernatural intervention and act to strengthen the faith of those who follow them. phases: After a thorough evaluation by a commission created by the local diocese, the bishop issues a statement of support for the event by stating that it contains nothing contrary to faith or morals, that it appears to be supernaturally inspired and that it is worthy of devotion by the faithful. Once approved by the bishop, a lengthy period of devotion by the faithful that results in a deepening of their faith and a return to a life of self-denial and prayer is permitted to develop. If this devotion develops and spreads, then the next stage becomes possible. Papal acknowledgement. The Pope states publicly that he is favorably disposed to the events and contents of the apparition. Liturgical recognition by placing celebration of the apparition on the Church's official liturgical calendar. |

Sister Lucia, the last of the three, died a year ago and on Sunday [2/2005] her remains were moved to her last resting place in the Shrine of Fatima—where they saw visions of the Virgin which have become some of the most important in the Catholic Church. Church officials said around 100,000 people packed the Fatima sanctuary, about 95 miles north of Portugal’s capital Lisbon. They had come from all over Portugal and the world. |
