James S. Waller was born about 1822 probably in Hancock Co., GA. He moved to Upson Co., GA with his parents and married there on Dec. 27, 1842 Nancy Ann Peugh (Pugh) (See Pugh family). He was in Upson Co. as late as 1845. He purchased the land that Asa Peugh (father-in law) had won in the 1821 land Lottery from his estate. This was just east of Rover in what was then Pike Co. but became part of Spalding Co. He served as a private in Co. G, 63rd Regt. GA Vol. Infantry (Spalding Co.) from Aug. 4, 1863. He served with this unit at Thunderbolt and Rosedew Islands near Savannah. The Nov. & Dec. 1863 muster rolls list him as present-sick. In the middle of May 1864 the regiment moved north to join the Army of TN. As they passed Griffin he was returned home where he died as the result of measles on July 17, 1864. He was probably buried in a now lost family cemetery at his homeplace (his father-in-law, Asa Peugh, probally also buried there). Nancy Peugh Waller was born Feb. 10, 1825 in either Jasper Co. or what is not Spalding Co. About 1868 Nancy and her children moved to east of Zebulon, Pike Co. on the Barnesville Road. She received a Civil War widows pension from the State of GA in 1891. Nancy Peugh Waller died Jan. 3, 1907 in Pike Co. Their children:

married 1st in Scotland Elizabeth Gordon who is supposed to have
died in Scotland, 2nd in MD about 1669 Ruth Moore (daughter of
Richard and Jane Moore a planter and barrister of St. Mary's Co.,
MD), died 1717 in Prince George's Co., MD at his home "Bacon
Hall". Ruth Moore Beal died after 1706 but before her husband.
Named for St. Ninian, patron saint of the Lowlands. Commissioned
a Cornet under Leslie in the Scottish Army which opposed Cromwell.
Captured at the Battle of Dunbar Sept. 3, 1650 and condemned
to 5 years of servitude in Ireland. After a short stay in Ireland,
he and 149 other Scotsman went sent by prison ship to Barbadoes
in the West Indies. In 1652 he was again transferred to MD where
he served 5 years with Richard Hall of Calvert Co. In 1657 he
proved his right to 50 acres of land in Calvert Co., MD, the first
of many land grants he would receive He was seven feet tall and
had red hair and must have been a most impressive person. He
said that his name should be pronounced 'ringing bell" and
used that image as his seal. In 1676 he was commissioned Lt.
of Lord Baltimore's Yacht, "The Royal Charles'. In 1681
he was the Chief Indian Ranger with a rank of Captain, Deputy
Surveyor of Charles Co. 1684, Peace Officer for Calvert Co. 1686,
the first Burgess from the newly created Prince George's Co. to
the Assembly, 1693 Colonel, Commander in Chief of Provincial Forces
in MD. He was an original landowner in what is now Washington
DC and owned among other parcels the "Rock of Dumbarton:
now the site of the Dumbarton Oaks park and mansion. Established
a Presbyterian church in Upper Marlboro and has been called the
father of Presbyterianism in America. His children by his 1st

Yorkshire England, married in MD Rebecca Wilkinson (born
about 1639 daughter of Rev. William and Naomi Wilkinson and granddaughter
of Rev. Gabriel Wilkinson (born 1576 in Yorkshire, died Dec. 17,
1658) William Wilkinson was the 1st Anglican clergyman in MD)
died Mar. 28, 1676 at his home, 'The Lawyer's Lodging" on
Aldermansbury Stree in St. Mary's City. MD. He lived at St. Mary's
Co. MD and became one of the first alderman of St. Mary's City,
appointed Hign Sheriff of St. Mary's and justice of the county
court. 1n 1664, on Aug. 19, 1668 he was appointed Commissioner
of the Peace, represented the county in General Assembly of 1669,
1674, 1675. Rebecca Wilkinson Dent married 2nd Col. Thomas Addison
by whom she had a son, Thomas Addison. Rebecca died by Aug. 20,

Perthshire Scotland about 1610, may have married 1st in MD Margaret
Braithwaite (daughter of Captain William Braithwaite, member of
the 1st General Assembly and Acting Governor of MD who died about
1649 and Helenor Stephenson), 2nd before 1663 Sarah who
died after Mar. 31, 1671, 3rd about 1672 Elizabeth Hawkins, died
in 1677 at his home "Anchovie Hills" in Calvert Co.,
MD. He was an officer in the army of King Charles II and captured
at the Battle of Worcester on Sept. 3, 1651 (a year to the day
after the Battle of Dunbar)(It is possible that he was captured
earlier at Dunbar or at Preston in 1648). Sent with other Scottish
prisoners to MD by way of Barbados arriving in the Chesapeake
in the Spring of 1652. Acquired 1000s of acres of land in various
MD counties. He is considered to be the ancestor of most if not

Convention of Estates which recognized the reform doctrine and

he was declared a legitimate son of Donald Campbell. Dean of
