News and Achievements

 

Flying

Two Gliding scholarships have been successfullycompleted at Syerston by Squadron cadets , Rowberry, J. (now Flt. Sergeant) and Richards, S.(now CWO.) They have been presented with their solo wings. CWO Richards has very recently gained his solo wings after successfully completing his Flying Scholarship in Dundee, going on his first solo flight after only 4 hours.

Sporting
The Basic Expedition Leaders Award (from the C C P R) was begun in October 2002 by two of the Squadron's Cadets and successfully completed in
June 2003. Congratulations to CWO Richards, S. and Flt. Sergeant Rowberry, J. They have completed their community hours and are assisting the squadron in their Adventure Activities in the Brecon Beacons.

Cdt. Maynard, M.has represented the ATC National Team at Athletics against other Athletic Clubs at Cosford.

Cadets have represented the squadron at various levels :-

Representing 3WW in Interwing Athletics; Cpl. Beynon, Cdt. Nicol-Jones, Cdt. Maynard.

For Regional Athletics; Cdt. Nicol-Jones (U15B) ; Cdt. Maynard (Junior Women)

Cdt. Richards, P. selected for the Wing swimming team.

Duke of Edinburgh
Cadets have gained their Duke of Edinburgh Awards at various levels and continue to work towards their awards; more later.

Adventure
The squadron has had some enjoyable weekends in the Brecon Beacons; Pen y Fan from Storey Arms, Corn Du and the ridge dropping back down to the Neuadd Reservoir on a Saturday and Sgwd yr Eira on the Sunday,for example on one weekend. I won't mention the midges at our campsite except that you couldn't see to hit the ball when playing baseball!!

More recently we visited the Beacons (on Sunday 7th December) and there were no midges. Mind you with a steady 30 kph plus wind and air temperature of around 6 degrees C it was equivalent to around -5 and it's not only midges that don't like the cold.

Shooting
Despite the Firing Range at Picton Barracks being unaccessible (during the Firemen's strike) there have been some
successes
; more later.
