Usagi (also known as Serena) is the main character of the show. She was a normal 14 year old girl when one day a strange black cat with a crescent moon on its forehead came to her. This cat, Luna, could talk, and told Usagi that she was destined to be a sailor soldier, Sailor Moon. Luna gave Usagi a transformation brooch, and told her that she was meant to protect the Princess of the Moon, Princess Serenity.
Usagi eventually meets up with four other sailor soldiers, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and Venus, and together they fight the evil Dark Kingdom. It is later discovered that Usagi is the reincarnation of Princess Serenity, and that she must defeat the Dark Kingdom and save her love, Prince Endymion, who was reincarnated as Mamoru Chiba (also known as Darien) on Earth. After defeating the evil Queen Metallia, Usagi and the rest of the senshi (soldiers) die, but are reborn again.
It is prior to the next battle against the Black Moon family that we meet Chibi-Usa (also known as Rini). The Black Moon has destroyed the future timeline. Chibi-Usa is from the 30th century and travelled back in time to save her timeline in the future and her mother. Chibi-Usa , known in the future as Princess Serenity, is the daughter of Usagi and Mamoru in this future when they become Neo-Queen Serenity and King Endymion. With the help of Sailor Moon, Chibi-Usa is able to save her future world and bring her mother back to life. After these events, Chibi-Usa returns to the 20th century under her mother's instructions to train to become a senshi, Sailor Chibi Moon.
Both Usagi and Chibi-Usa are very alike in many ways, they are whiny, immature and love to fight over Mamoru's affection, but when the situation calls for it, they are self-sacrificing and courageous, just as any Princess or Queen should be.
