W&J SUFFERS TOUGH DEFEAT AT
RHODE ISLAND IN OT 4-3
W&J ALSO FALLS TO RHODE ISLAND
5-2 ON SATURDAY NIGHT
DECEMBER 9, 2006 -- The #18 ranked Presidents out-skated and out-played the
#4 Rhode Island Rams for nearly the entire game but it wasn't for long
enough as Rhode Island dug down deep and found a way to win with the 4-3
overtime victory. W&J jumped out to another early lead but could not hold
on. Chad Talotta scored the Presidents first goal (his 9th) while
Ryne Savisky (20th) and Jim Pasquine (14th) added singles for the
Presidents. Anthony Rowella scored Rhode Island's first goal.
W&J found
themselves in great shape with the 3-1 lead in the second period but Rhode
Island's Sean Arthur put one in to cut the score to 3-2 at the end of two
periods of play. W&J and Rhode Island battled back and forth down the
stretch but W&J took a late penalty to give URI a power play opportunity
with 4 minutes to play in regulation. Pittsburgh native Ben Herring scored
for Rhode Island off a back door setup to tie the game at three apiece. Bill
McKeirnan went on to score in overtime for the Rams as the Rams snatched the
victory from the grasp of the W&J Presidents.
W&J also fell
5-2 versus Rhode Island on Saturday night. Freshman Ryne Savisky
(19th of the year) and Craig Frey (15th) scored the lone goals for
the Presidents.
W&J SWEEPS WEEKEND SERIES AT
DUQUESNE
DECEMBER 3, 2006 -- The #18 ranked W&J Presidents (15-4-1) opened up with a
5-0 lead through two periods of play and held on for a 5-3 victory at
Duquesne Sunday evening at Shady Side Academy. The win gave the Presidents
their 14th in a row and now will focus on a highly anticipated rematch
versus Kent State on 12.6.2006.
W&J outplayed
the Dukes throughout the first and got an early goal from Ryne Savisky
notched his 19th of the year in the first period as he put home a loose puck
that bounced out in front of the Duquesne net. W&J got a crucial rebound
goal on a backhander from
Jeff Rich with under a minute to play in the first off a setup by
Chad Talotta and Ryne Savisky.
W&J picked up
where it left off as they entered the second period. Mario Panucci
scored his 12th early from the slot and wristed one under the arm of
Duquesne goaltender Matt Vaughan. Midway through the second period, Craig
Frey (14th) took a lead pass from Dave Bean and deposited a shot
to the back of the net on the forehand and put W&J up 4-0. Clint Lang
scored his 2nd of the season with a power play goal with a shot from the
right side after some puck movement between Craig Frey and Aaron
Siegel and gave W&J a solid 5-0 lead at the end of two periods of play.
W&J goaltender
Jed Michael made some very crucial stops from in front during a third
period rally attempt by the Dukes. However, Duquesne played physical in the
early stages of the 3rd period and popped in two quick power play goals as
Mike Papciak and Mike Heath tallied for the Dukes. W&J buckled down the
stretch despite numerous random and often unexplained stoppages in play that
halted the momentum of the game. Luke Wawrzeniak added a late third goal for
the Dukes with 1:26 to go but it would only delay the inevitable as W&J
picked up the 5-3 victory for their 15th win of the season.
W&J PICKS UP ROAD WIN AT
DUQUESNE
DECEMBER 2, 2006 -- Washington & Jefferson (14-4-1) picked up another road
victory versus Duquesne at Shady Side Academy on Friday night. W&J's 6-3
victory gave the Presidents their 13th win in a row and remained perfect in
College Hockey Mid-America play. Ryne Savisky picked up the hat trick
for his 16th, 17th, and 18th goals of the season. Bob Rose added a
goal and dished out 3 more assists on the night while Dave Crockett
(goals 13,14) lit the lamp twice and picked up an assist for the Presidents.
Andrew Torchia started in net giving him his 9th win on the season.
Washington &
Jefferson came out sluggish in the first period but was still able to score
first off some nice tape to tape, cross ice passing from Dave Bean to
Bob Rose to Ryne Savisky who wristed it home for the 1st goal
of the game on the power play. Duquesne answered back as Andrew Omstead put
one in for the Dukes to tie it at one at the end of one.
In the second
period, Duquesne had a chance to go up a goal but Mike Papciak rung one off
the post. Soon after, W&J rushed the puck up the ice and Dave Crockett
took a pass from Bob Rose and Crockett backhanded one top shelf into
the right hand corner of the net. Duquesne tied it at 2 apiece before the
end of the second period.
W&J finally
found its legs and came out quick in the third and scored early in the third
on the power play again on almost an exact replica of their first period
goal as it was from Dave Bean to Bob Rose to Ryne Savisky
who buried it from the left side. However, the Dukes would not go away and
Mike Papciak scored on the two man advantage as Luke Wawrzeniak and Dave
Young worked the puck in the W&J defensive zone and tied the game at three.
W&J went up
for good as Bob Rose scored his 5th of the season on a wrister after
some nice puck movement between Craig Frey and Dave Crockett.
Ryne Savisky completed the hat trick soon after the Rose goal to give
W&J a comfortable 2 goal cushion as Chad Talotta and Dave Bean
picked up assists on the play. Savisky skated down the right side opened up
the Duquesne goaltender and wristed one five-hole for the goal. Dave
Crockett completed the W&J scoring with an empty netter for the 6-3
final.
W&J will play
again on Sunday versus Duquesne at Shady Side Academy. The puck is set to
drop at 1:00 PM.
W&J HOPES TO CONTINUE HOT
STREAK
W&J LOOKS TO CONTINUE
WIN STREAK VERSUS DUQUESNE
NOVEMBER 27, 2006 - W&J Hockey is amidst its Thanksgiving break but will
soon look to extend its win streak to 13 games versus Duquesne University on
December 2nd - 5:15 PM at Shadyside Academy. W&J currently has the longest
win streak in the nation and has gotten consistent and balanced goal scoring
from its depth. Senior forward Bob Rose currently leads the ACHA with
23 assists while Ryne Savisky, Dave Crockett, Craig Frey,
Jim Pasquine, & Mario Panucci have all scored double digit
goal totals already this season.
W&J's
defenseman have also jumped in the scoring act. Defensemen Dave Bean
(22 pts) and Mike Guthrie (12) points have scored consistently of
late to provide an extra punch for the Presidents. Forwards Chad Talotta
and Jeff Cobb also have dished out plenty of assists and are in
double digit scoring as well. W&J has also done a better job of staying out
of the box, resulting in fewer shorthanded situations which ultimately has
been a large part of the success. In the meantime, the power play has
thrived and has lead to several key goals for the Presidents offense.
The W&J
defense (consisted of Dave Bean, Rob Fitzpatrick, Mike
Guthrie, Matt Kubacki, Clint Lang, & Aaron Siegel)
has tightened up this year in front of goaltender Andrew Torchia who
has already won 8 games this season.
W&J SUCCESSFUL TRIP TO OHIO;
WIN AT YOUNGSTOWN
JIM
PASQUINE PICKS UP HAT
TRICK AS PRESIDENTS' WIN STREAK CONTINUES
NOVEMBER 19, 2006 -- W&J (13-4-1) defeated Youngstown State by the score of
7-3 at the Ice Zone in Youngstown, Ohio. The win gave W&J its 12th in a row
and the Presidents remained perfect with a 9-0-0 record in College Hockey
Mid-America play.
Jim
Pasquine notched the hat trick (11,12,13) for the Presidents. Jeff
Cobb, Dave Bean, Craig Frey, and Mario Panucci
added singles for the Presidents. Pasquine's first goal came off a pass from
freshman Mike Ellis. Ellis and Panucci also assisted on Pasquine's
second first period goal. Jeff Cobb scored W&J's third goal, his 6th
of the year. High scoring defenseman Dave Bean scored his 7th off a
pass from Ryne Savisky giving W&J a 4-2 lead at the end of the first
period.
W&J broke the
game wide open in the second period as Craig Frey scored his 13th off
passing from Dave Bean and Bob Rose to give W&J a 5-2 lead
early in the second period. Mario Panucci scored short-handed for his
11th goal of the season off some puck movement between
Rob Fitzpatrick and Ryne Savisky.
Jim
Pasquine capped off his hat trick and the W&J scoring for the night late
in the second period with a power play goal after an assist from Jeff
Cobb.
Andrew
Torchia (8-3-1) played steady again in net stopping 29 of 32 Youngstown
shots on goal to earn his 8th victory of the season. The win gave W&J its
12th win in a row (14th out of its last 15 games). W&J will now be idle
until they play two games at Duquesne on December 2nd and 3rd. We'll see if
the Presidents can keep it together despite the slight layoff and extend
their win streak even further.
PRESIDENTS STORM PAST JOHN CARROLL 11-3
NOVEMBER 18, 2006 -- The newly #19 ranked Washington & Jefferson Presidents
got off to another fast start against John Carroll and cruised to an 11-3
victory. W&J extended its win streak to 11 games against the Streaks of JCU.
W&J jumped out to a big lead via 4 quick goals in the first period. Dave
Crockett struck first for his 12th off an assist from Bob Rose.
Defenseman
Mike Guthrie picked up his 2nd of the season unassisted. Chad Talotta
(8th) made it 3-0 as he put in a Mike Guthrie shot on goal. Later,
Mike Ellis and
Jim Pasquine hooked up as Ellis scored his 4th of the season with
8:30 to go in the first period. John Carroll's lone goal came on the power
play.
Chad
Talotta buried his second of the game in period number two after
Mike Guthrie and Ryne Savisky worked the magic. W&J extended its
lead as freshman forward Jim Pasquine picked up his 10th goal of the
year on another assist from Bob Rose and Dave Bean to give the
Presidents a comfortable 6-2 lead. Dave Crockett struck again for
lucky #13 of the season and the rout was on.
Dave Bean
later added another goal after Ryne Savisky moved him the puck. The
Parkway Line hooked up again as Mario Panucci scored his 10th after
some puck distribution between Savisky and Chad Talotta. Mike Guthrie
finished off his stellar night with a goal of his own to put his stamp on
the game as the Presidents rolled to their 11th in a row.
W&J will next
play at Youngstown State on Sunday, November 19th at 1:00 PM at the Ice
Zone.
* GAME NOTES:
Ryne Savisky's three assists puts Savisky at 33 points this season. *
Defenseman Mike Guthrie had a 4 point night with 2 goals and 2 assists.
PRESIDENTS DOMINATE DUQUESNE,
WIN STREAK AT 10
NOVEMBER 15, 2006 -- The stars were out tonight and they shined bright at
the Iceoplex along with superstar special guests "Earl the Pearl" and "Robin
the Boy Wonder" who made their presence known. Washington & Jefferson didn't
take Duquesne lightly and put a baker's dozen on the board tonight in route
to a 12-4 victory over visiting Duquesne University. Ryne Savisky and
Dave Crockett each scored 4 goals and added an assist while Mario
Panucci slapped home a goal in the third and added 5 assists on the
night. Senior Bob Rose hit the scoreboard yet again and added 2
assists in the Presidents' dominating effort. Defenseman Dave Bean
tallied three more assists on the night while Jim Pasquine's
consistent goal scoring continued. Goaltender
Andrew Torchia won yet again in net between the pipes for his 7th win of
the season.
W&J came out
strong in the first as Dave Crockett sneaked a shot past the Duquesne
goaltender for the early 1-0 lead off a pass from Mario Panucci.
Jim Pasquine answered shortly after the Crockett goal as he took a pass
from Aaron Siegel in the slot and banged it home for the goal. The goal gave
W&J a 2-0 lead at the end of one.
W&J continued
the pressure into the second period and poured on a healthy dose of offense.
Ryne Savisky picked up his first of the night on the power play. On
the play, Bean moved the puck to Rose. Rose put a quick shot on net and
Savisky poked in the rebound.
Mike
Guthrie added a goal of his own after playing catch with Panucci on the
power play. Guthrie took a shot from the point and the puck found its way
through some traffic and into the net giving W&J a healthy 4-0 lead. The W&J
offensive display continued through the second period and Savisky tacked on
his 2nd goal of the night. After a nice setup between Dave Bean and
Bob Rose, Rose moved a nice cross ice pass to a cutting Savisky.
Savisky promptly took a shot on goal and put it past the sprawling Duquesne
goaltender for the 5-0 W&J lead.
Dave
Crockett got into the scoring act again on a breakaway after a lead pass
from Dave Bean sent him on his way. Crockett went to the backhand and roofed
it for the 6-0 W&J lead. Duquesne's David Young would break any hopes for a
shutout with a shorthanded goal after a pass from Luke Wawrzeniak. Dave
Crockett quickly answered with another goal for the hat trick on the
power play after a setup pass by Panucci. Panucci fed one in front and
Crockett sneaked on in from the back door.
No later than
Crockett's hat trick, Ryne Savisky picked up a hat trick of his own.
On the play Panucci ripped a shot off Duquesne's goaltenders facemask where
Savisky snapped in the rebound for W&J's 8th goal of the night. Dave
Crockett was not yet done and added yet another goal (his 4th) of the night
just before the end of the second period after Ryne Savisky and
Mario Panucci set up on the power play. Panucci moved the puck to
Savisky from the far boards. Savisky spotted Crockett camped out again for a
dunk and the goal gave W&J a 9-1 lead at the end of two.
Duquesne added
a goal on the power play off a shot form the right point early in the third
but Mario Panucci answered back with a slap shot from the right side
just minutes later after a nice setup between Mike Guthrie and
Clint Lang who moved the puck at will from the points all night long.
Dave Bean played a solid game and quietly picked up 3 more assists on
the night and played tremendously on the power play unit yet again.
Ryne
Savisky would top off his stellar night with a completely sick goal in
which he took a tape to tape lead pass from teammate Craig Frey,
twisted a Duquesne player inside out, put the puck between the defender's
legs, deked and then slid the puck five-hole for his 4th goal on the
evening.
Captain Bob
Rose continued his scoring pace and his hot hand capped off the nearly
flawless W&J game with a nice shot after a pass from Crockett giving W&J its
12th goal of the night. Chad Talotta played a fierce game adding a
couple of assists on the night and worked his magic on the penalty kill, yet
again stifling the Dukes power play unit.
Duquesne's
Mike Heath and Luke Wawrzeniak added goals late in the third for the Ice
Dukes but it would be for not as the President's rolled to a 12-4 final and
have found their niche as they have ascended atop College Hockey
Mid-America.
PRESIDENTS vs. DUQUESNE -
PREVIEW
NOVEMBER 15, 2006 -- Washington & Jefferson looks to earn its 11th win of
the season and 10th in a row tonight (Wednesday, November 15th, 2006) versus
Duquesne tonight at the Iceoplex. The puck will drop at 8:30 PM. The
Presidents will be moving up in the new rankings that are due out on
November 17th and are looking to put another one in the win column.
Washington &
Jefferson has produced a balanced scoring punch this season with 9 players (Ryne
Savisky, Bob Rose, Craig Frey, Dave Bean, Jim Pasquine, Mario Panucci, Dave
Crockett, Jeff Cobb, & Chad Talotta) having already achieved double digit
point totals. To go along with the luxury of having consistent offense, the
W&J defense and goaltending have clamped down on the opposition and have
limited scoring opportunities significantly.
W&J faces a
Duquesne team that has struggled recently, however played Penn State close
in a 4-2 loss on November 11th. What has gone unnoticed is the fact that
Duquesne has lost close games versus tough competition. The 1-12-1 record
can be misleading with one goal losses to IUP & WVU while tying Lindenwood
and playing Penn State tough this past weekend. Duquesne is led by Mike
Heath (27 points), Mike Papciak of Peters Township (17 points in just 8
games), and Luke Wawrzeniak of Thomas Jefferson (16 points in 10 games).
As always, check back for the post-game summary and details.
PRESIDENTS SWEEP IUP
NOVEMBER 11, 2006 -- W&J swept the visiting IUP Indians Saturday evening in
convincing fashion by the score of 7-2. W&J outshot IUP 49-21 on its way to
its 10th win of the season and 9th in a row. Ryne Savisky scored 2
goals and added an assist while Bob Rose picked up 3 assists on the
night. Craig Frey's hot hand continued with 2 more goals and an
assist as well. Dave Crockett, Chad Talotta, & Mike Ellis
added singles for the Presidents and Mario Panucci dished out two
more assists on the night.
W&J trailed
1-0 after one period of play but Bob Rose and Ryne Savisky
hooked up for two goals (on two nice passing plays) in a matter of minutes
to give W&J the lead that it would not relinquish. Late in the third,
Craig Frey took a pass from Mario Panucci, skated it into the IUP
zone, and Frey ripped a nice wrister for the crucial third goal. The shot
went top shelf and popped the water bottle off of the net and gave W&J a 3-1
lead at the end of two. Meanwhile, Andrew Torchia made several key
stops early in the game to stall IUP in the offensive zone. The win gave
Torchia his 6th win on the young season.
IUP answered
early in the third on a nice redirection in front by Chris Ferrogine.
However, Chad Talotta answered for a back door goal off passing by
Ryne Savisky and Mario Panucci. W&J poured it on early in third
and took a commanding lead as Dave Crockett took a pass off the
boards from Frey in which Crockett made a slick move on a breakaway and
sneaked it along the ice for the 5-2 lead.
Following the
breakaway Mike Ellis scored his 3rd of the season and W&J's 6th goal
of the game on a nice tip in front off an initial shot by defenseman
Clint Lang. Craig Frey picked up his second goal of the game. On
the play, nice passing between Mike Guthrie, Bob Rose moved
the puck up ice to Frey. Frey took the pass, side-stepped an IUP defenseman,
skated it in, and ripped a wrister to seal the deal and put the stamp on the
weekend.
W&J now has a
stronghold on first place in the CHMA and will prepare for its Wednesday
night game versus Duquesne on 11.15.06 - 8:30 PM at the Iceoplex at
Southpointe.
W&J SKATES PAST #18 IUP;
IMPROVE TO 9-4-1
NOVEMBER 10, 2006 -- W&J & IUP battled through a choppy game and a display
of choppy officiating at the Indiana Ice Center in which W&J picked up the
thrilling 5-4 victory in overtime. The win gave W&J its 8th in a row.
Craig Frey deflected home his 10th goal of the year in overtime to give
the Presidents a huge win in CHMA play. Bob Rose & Mario Panucci
each scored shorthanded breakaway goals while Jim Pasquine, Jeff
Cobb, & Jeff Rich added singles for W&J.
W&J struck
first as Jim Pasquine scored as he chipped one in for his 8th of the
season. On the play, Dave Bean worked the puck to Ryne Savisky.
Savisky put the shot on goal and Pasquine camped out to put one home for the
1-0 Presidents lead. Chad Talotta had a chance to put W&J up two but
just missed on a breakaway after he made a great play shorthanded.
Jeff Rich
skated tough all night and it showed on the scoreboard as well. Rich put W&J
up 2-0 with 10 minutes to go in the first. W&J looked for the crucial three
goal lead, however it never came. IUP answered as Trevor Kuhlman scored with
6:48 remaining in the first.
IUP tied the
game midway through the second period when Jim Lutz scored the equalizer off
a pass from Ben Robertson. However, Bob Rose lit the lamp with his
shorthanded goal after a nice backhand pass from Craig Frey on the
breakout. Rose went to the forehand and wristed it past the IUP goaltender
for the 3-2 advantage. The game continued back and forth and IUP struck back
once again to tie the game at three late in the second.
Washington &
Jefferson took a late second period penalty which carried over into the
third. Just 45 seconds into the third, Mario Panucci stole the puck
from an IUP defenseman as the Indians attempted to set up the power play.
Panucci outskated both defensemen and walked in and scored five hole on the
breakaway to put W&J up 4-3.
However, IUP
answered with a back door goal late in the game after controversial W&J
penalties put IUP on the two man advantage. The game proceeded to overtime
deadlocked at four apiece. This time it was Craig Frey who delivered
the heroics as he deflected home a Mike Guthrie shot on goal giving
W&J the 5-4 victory.
W&J goaltender
Jed Michael made some nice saves down the stretch to earn his 2nd win
of the season.
Washington &
Jefferson will face IUP tomorrow (11.11.06) at the Iceoplex at 5:00 PM for
Round II of this weekend's home and home.
W&J STREAKS PAST JOHN CARROLL 10-3
NOVEMBER 8, 2006 -- On Wednesday night, W&J improved to 8-4-1 overall and
extended its current win streak to 7 games in another impressive outing
versus John Carroll University. W&J had a big night offensively and
dominated play from the start. Craig Frey notched the hat trick (7th,
8th, & 9th goals of the year) to add to his torrid goal scoring of late and
Ryne Savisky tallied 4 assists on the night.
W&J came out
quick on the power play as Jeff Cobb scored just 1:03 into the game
off passing from Mike Guthrie and Ryne Savisky. W&J scored its
second as Jim Pasquine put home a rebound off a Savisky shot on goal
for his 7th of the season. With credit to Cobb on the setup.
W&J took the
important three goal lead as defenseman Clint Lang made a nice
breakout pass to Savisky coming out of the W&J defensive zone. Savisky and
Mario Panucci skated into the JCU zone on a 2 on 1 and made the
Streaks pay. Savisky took the initial shot on net where a rebound was
promptly deposited into the back of the net by Panucci for his 7th of the
year.
John Carroll
cut the W&J lead to 3-1 as Tristan Tripodi picked up his first of two goals
on the night. However, Dave Crockett answered right back as Craig
Frey spotted Crockett and sent him on his way for a breakaway. Crockett
finished the play with a slick backhander, top-shelf for the freshman's 6th
goal of the year.
W&J continued
to outshoot and out skate John Carroll as the game progressed through the
second period. Frey scored the first of his three early in the second to
give W&J a 5-1 lead but Tripodi once again answered right back for his
second goal of the night for JCU. However, it would not be nearly enough as
the Presidents were just starting their offensive outpour. Jeff Cobb
scored his second of the night from Pasquine and Savisky to give W&J the 6-2
advantage.
Frey tallied
his second goal of the night as Dave Crockett returned the favor for
Frey's earlier assistance. The offensive show continued and defenseman
Dave Bean got in on the act yet again with a big shot from the point for
his 6th of the campaign. Not to be outdone, freshman Mike Ellis took
a nice pass from Chad Talotta late in the second period and put home
his second of the year and gave the Presidents a 9-2 lead at the end of two
periods of play.
Craig Frey
finished his big night with a shorthanded backhand goal for the hat trick
after another nice setup pass from Dave Crockett on a 2 on 1 break.
Goaltender
Andrew Torchia improved his record to 5-3-1, stopping 20+ shots on the
evening.
W&J has
continued its hot play and has made it a goal to focus its attention on IUP.
W&J will travel to IUP on 11.10.06 - 7:30PM at the Indiana Ice Center for
game 1 and will return home to host IUP on 11.11.06 - 5:00 PM for bragging
rights and for tops in the CHMA standings.
W&J DEFEATS NAVY 4-3
NOVEMBER 5, 2006 -- In a choppy and penalty-filled game, W&J held on to
defeat visiting Navy on Sunday afternoon at the Iceoplex by the score of
4-3. The win gave the Presidents its 6th in a row, improving its overall
record to 7-4-1. Trailing 1-0, Dave Bean answered for the Presidents
as he took a low shot from the left point. Craig Frey scored his 6th
of the year on the power play after some passing between Mario Panucci
and
Dave Bean. Bob Rose put W&J up 3-1 as he walked in on a breakaway
and slid one along the ice on the forehand for his 3rd goal of the season.
However, W&J
had trouble staying out of the box and let Navy back into the game. Navy
answered with a goal late in the second period to cut the W&J lead to 3-2 at
the end of two. W&J and Navy battled back and forth throughout the game,
which had very little flow, as each team was assessed numerous penalties.
Goaltender
Andrew Torchia made several key and point blank stops to preserve the
W&J lead. W&J found itself on the power play midway through the third period
but Navy's Patrick Sullivan stole an errant pass and skated in for the
game-tying breakaway goal.
W&J came right
back just two minutes later Ryne Savisky moved the puck to Bob
Rose on the power play. Rose quickly slid one in front and Jim
Pasquine jammed one home to put W&J up 4-3. Navy looked to capitalize
late with the goaltender pulled but could not find the equalizer as W&J
continued its winning ways and are now atop the College Hockey Mid-America
standings.
W&J PICKS UP ROAD WIN AT PITT
NOVEMBER 4, 2006 -- Washington & Jefferson traveled to the Harmarville
Bladerunner's on Friday night and picked up its fifth win in a row over the
hosting Pitt Panthers. The choppy game play kept the game close but W&J was
able to hold on for the 2-1 victory. Craig Frey scored two goals for
the second consecutive game. W&J peppered Pitt with shots, pouring 45 on
Pitt goaltender Ed Nusser, who played extremely well and stood on his head
for the Panthers.
W&J goaltender Jed Michael picked up his second win of the season in
net for the Presidents. W&J will next play on Sunday, 11.05.06 - 2:50 PM at
the Iceoplex versus Navy.
W&J SWEEPS DELAWARE - 4 GAME WIN STREAK
OCTOBER 29, 2006 -- W&J played nearly flawless as they convincingly defeated
a strong Delaware team for the second time this weekend. The Presidents came
out strong and used their speed to take advantage of the open ice to win by
the score of 4-2. Craig Frey scored two goals, Mario Panucci
added a goal and an assist, and Andrew Torchia made 26 saves as the
Presidents swept the Hens at the Iceoplex.
W&J found
itself shorthanded early but Jeff Cobb and Bob Rose did a
great job on the penalty kill throughout the first period and stifled
Delaware's attempt to gain the zone. The game opened up quickly after the
Presidents stopped taking penalties.
W&J tallied
its first goal with just under four minutes to go in the first as Craig
Frey notched the first of his two goals on the night. On
the play,
Bob Rose's hot hand continued as he worked the puck over to the left
point to Mike Guthrie. Guthrie put a nice slap shot on net where Frey
banged home the rebound.
Craig Frey struck back quicker than the Evil Empire, as he scored his
second goal just two minutes later on a sick back hand shot that found its
way top shelf off some tape to tape passing from Mario Panucci and
Dave Crockett. The two late period goals gave W&J all of the momentum
and a 2-0 lead at the end of one.
 |
Ryne Savisky races
for a loose puck. |
W&J came out
even faster in the second period. However, W&J couldn't solve Delaware
goaltender Jim Depfer again until late in the period. Rob Fitzpatrick
made a nice lead pass to Mario Panucci. Panucci took the pass, leaned
into one just as he entered the Delaware zone, and ripped a shot top shelf,
glove side past Depfer. The goal gave W&J a 3-0 lead at the end of two and
crushed the thought of a Delaware comeback. The goal was his 6th of the
season and also had 2 disallowed later in the game.

Mario Panucci (right) just after Frey scored his 2nd of the game on a
backhand. |
However, W&J
continued to move the puck effectively as the game progressed. The W&J
defenseman did an excellent job of moving the puck up the ice to the
awaiting forwards. W&J also continued to pepper Delaware with shots and
frustrated Delaware with their speed.
The W&J
defense stalled the Hens' offense and goaltender Andrew Torchia
stopped nearly everything he faced as he won his 3rd game of the season.
Defenseman Rob Fitzpatrick skated strong and had two huge hits that
brought the W&J crowd to its feet. Freshman Aaron Siegel's stay at
home style of defense has greatly benefited the Presidents this season.
Siegel broke up several attempts by Delaware and an odd-man rush. Mike
Guthrie did the same and moved the puck well out of the zone. Guthrie
also picked up an assist Matt Kubacki skated tough along the boards
and out-muscled the Delaware forwards deep in the defensive zone. Clint
Lang and Dave Bean made some great passes and had some nice shots
on net, especially on the power play.
 |
Craig Frey (26),
Jim Pasquine(21), & Bob Rose (8) drive towards the Delaware net. |
The hitting
picked up and Bryan Colligan come out aggressive and made some big
hits to set the tone. Craig Frey, Jim Pasquine, & Mike
Ellis played tough for the Presidents. As the teams entered the third
period, W&J continued to put the puck on net. Nine minutes into the third,
W&J scored its final goal as Jeff Rich put home a Jim Pasquine
initial shot. Rich also pestered Delaware with his speed and drew three
penalties.
W&J continued
to milk the clock but managed to pour more shots on Depfer. Depfer stood up
to the challenge and played solid in net for Delaware, stopping 40+ W&J
shots. The infamous "Parkway Line" of Mario Panucci, Chad Talotta,
and Ryne Savisky moved the puck at will. Savisky and Talotta had
another great game and generated numerous scoring chances as the Presidents
worked the puck around inside the Delaware zone.

Delaware
scored two late goals but it would be for not as the Presidents picked up
their 2nd win of the weekend over #12 ranked Delaware. W&J improves its
record to 5-4-1 overall and has now won 4 in a row including 5 of its last 6
games.
W&J will next
play versus Pitt at Harmarville on Friday, November 3rd at 8:30 PM. W&J
defeated Pitt on October 11th by the score of 9-1 in their first meeting.
W&J WITH HUGE WIN OT OVER #12 DELAWARE
OCTOBER 27, 2006 -- ICEOPLEX AT SOUTHPOINTE -- In wins this season, the
common theme of W&J thus far has been a balanced overall team effort. W&J
proved it once again with balanced/timely scoring, solid goaltending, and
defensive awareness in a huge win for the Presidents Ice Hockey Team.
W&J picked up its biggest win of the season over visiting Delaware and it
couldn't have come at a better time. W&J and Delaware battled back and forth
and the Presidents edged the Hens 5-4 in overtime. Dave Crockett
played hero for the second game in a row and scored the game winner in
overtime as he snapped a one-timer top shelf off a nice setup pass from
Dave Bean.
Mario Panucci scored two goals on the night to give W&J a 1-0 lead
with a shot from the slot and then gave W&J a 4-3 lead with six minutes to
play off slick passing from Dave Crockett and Craig Frey.
However, Delaware answered back with just a minute to play in the game on
the power play to tie the game at four and send the game into overtime.
Jeff Cobb's senior leadership is priceless and the senior stepped up at
the right time as he scored W&J's first of three third period goals off a
slick pass from Chad Talotta that began the third period rally.
Seconds later, Dave "Don't call me Mr." Bean ripped a wrister, glove
side, that popped in and out of the net faster than you can say "Jack
Robinson", with just eight minutes to play and tied the game at three.
Freshman forward Ryne Savisky tortured the Hens' defense and found
several openings for lots of scoring chances and playmaking opportunities.
Savisky also benefited the Presidents yet again as an integral part of the
power play and penalty killing units.
 |
Dave Crockett (5) feeds a
tape to tape pass to Mario Panucci (19) for a backhand goal that put W&J
up 4-3 with just six minutes to play. Crockett would later promptly
score in overtime to give the Presidents a thrilling 5-4 win over #12
ranked Delaware. |
Penalty killing was essential early in the game and the combos of Bob
Rose, Ryne Savisky, Jeff Rich, Craig Frey, Chad Talotta, Mario Panucci
did an excellent job in doing so. Freshmen forwards Jim Pasquine &
Mike Ellis played strong along with sophomore Bryan Colligan on
the fore check.
The W&J defense played solid in front of goaltender Andrew Torchia.
Aaron Siegel, Rob Fitzpatrick, Matt Kubacki, & Mike
Guthrie all were solid in their own end and played physical against the
quick Delaware offense. Meanwhile, defensemen Dave Bean and Clint
Lang once again provided an offensive punch. However, it was Torchia who
stood up to the challenge late, making huge glove saves for the Presidents
down the stretch. Torchia stopped 24 of 28 Delaware shots on the night but
no stop was bigger than a save on a breakaway with under 3 minutes to play.
 |

Crockett and Craig Frey fight through the Delaware defense. |
GAME
NOTES: W&J found itself trailing 2-1 at the end of two and it seemed
that Delaware put the game away early in the third as it was awarded a
questionable penalty shot in which Joe Colletti sneaked one just inside the
top right corner for the 3-1 Delaware lead. Three of Delaware's 4 goals came
on special teams. Two on the power play and one on a penalty shot.
 |
Chad
Talotta (36) and Rob Fitzpatrick (24) playing heads up in the defensive
zone. |
Washington &
Jefferson and Delaware will square off for Round II tomorrow, Saturday
evening at the Iceoplex. The puck is set to drop at approximately 5:00PM.
W&J EDGES SRU IN SHOOTOUT: 4-3 FINAL
OCTOBER 25, 2006 -- Once again, W&J found itself in a familiar situation
tonight versus Slippery Rock at the Iceoplex at Southpointe: In a shootout.
W&J and SRU couldn't settle things via regulation and overtime so the teams
competed in what was a thrilling shootout ending in which the Presidents
prevailed via a Dave Crockett top shelf wrister.
Freshman
Ryne Savisky continued his scoring ways, lighting the lamp twice on the
night, including the Presidents' first goal and the game tying goal in the
final minute with W&J goaltender Jed Michael pulled. Chad Talotta
slid a pass across the SRU crease in the final seconds and Savisky promptly
buried it to send the game to OT.
Bob Rose
scored the Presidents second goal of the game as he out skated the defender
along the boards and slid one past the SRU goaltender to give the Presidents
a 2-1 lead. Goaltender Jed Michael had a spectacular night in night,
including a huge stop on a breakaway late in the third period. Michael also
stole the show in the shootout, stopping 10 out 10 Slippery Rock shooters.
W&J was once
again limited by taking numerous penalties, however behind great penalty
killing from the likes of Mario Panucci and Ryne Savisky, the
Presidents were able to storm back before the end of regulation and clinch
it in the shootout.

W&J SPLITS WITH MARYLAND
OCTOBER 21, 2006 -- W&J split 2 games at Maryland this weekend. In another
penalty filled weekend, W&J lost 7-4 on Friday night but rebounded with a
9-3 victory on Saturday. In Friday's game, freshman Jim Pasquine
scored 2 power play goals while freshman Mike Ellis scored his first
ACHA goal. Forward Craig Frey picked up his first goal of the season
as well. W&J pulled goaltender Andrew Torchia with under a minute to
go in a 6-4 game however, Maryland added the empty net goal for the 7-4
final.
In Saturday's
game, W&J's offense came to life in the third period. With the score tied
3-3, the Presidents' offense snapped out for 6 third period goals and put
the game on ice for the 9-3 victory. Jim Pasquine picked up his 2nd
two goal game of the weekend. Dave Crockett added two goals of his
own for the Presidents. Meanwhile,
Dave Bean and Jeff Cobb each picked up a goal and an assist.
Mario
Panucci finished off the scoring for the Presidents with a shorthanded
breakaway goal to end the night.
W&J POUNDS PITT 9-1
OCTOBER 12, 2006 -- W&J had its way with Pitt on Wednesday night as the
Presidents picked up their first win of the season in CHMA play with a 9-1
victory. There was plenty of scoring and it was a night of firsts for a few
Presidents in front of the pleased home crowd at the Iceoplex.
Senior Captain
Bob Rose had a 4 point night with his first goal of the season to go
along with three helpers. Line mate Jeff Cobb added a goal and two
assists as he returned from injury.
The "Parkway
Line" continued its scoring ways and struck early and often to help spot W&J
the lead. Ryne Savisky scored W&J's first goal and added two assists;
Chad Talotta scored twice for the second consecutive game while
adding an assist, & Mario Panucci dished out two assists in the first
period on Savisky and Talotta's goals.
W&J also got
scoring from the defense. Dave Bean added a goal and an assist,
Clint Lang scored his first on a nice shot from the point, and Rob
Fitzpatrick notched an assist.
It was a night
of firsts for several freshmen as Jim Pasquine (1 goal, 1 assist) and
Jeff Rich (1 goal) picked up their first goal at Washington &
Jefferson. Meanwhile, freshmen defenseman Aaron Siegel, Mike Ellis,
& Nick Masters picked up their first collegiate points on assists.
Sophomore
forward Bryan Colligan added an assist to pick up his first point of
the year on Pasquine's first goal as a President.
Goaltender
Andrew Torchia was solid yet again between the pipes allowing just one
goal on 17 Pitt shots.
W&J vs. PENN STATE: A GAME FOR THE ARCHIVES
OCTOBER 7, 2006 -- The W&J Presidents and heavily favored Penn State Icers
battled back and forth in what was an emotional rollercoaster for both
teams. In an evenly played game, W&J fought tough with a total team effort
and had a chance to win late versus the visiting Icers. Nevertheless, Penn
State scored with just 22 seconds remaining as Icers forward Jamie Zimmel
took an outlet pass and skated in for the clinching goal and the 4-3 final.
W&J came out
quick but Luke Dilorenzo lit the lamp first on the power play for the
Icers as he slapped a shot past W&J goaltender Andrew Torchia for th early
1-0 lead. W&J answered back as freshman Dave Crockett wristed a laser
past PSU goaltender Nick Signet just a few following the Dilorenzo goal.
Mario Panucci tortured the Icers all night long and missed a few minutes
later on a breakaway as Signet just got over to make a nice save and kept
the game tied at one at the end of one. Just a few minutes later, freshman
Mike Ellis rang one off the side of the post and Signet quickly
covered up for a stoppage in play.
In the second
period, PSU came out quick and tested goaltender Andrew Torchia who
promptly stood up to the challenge, stopping 18 of 19 second period Penn
State shots. However, Michael McMullen finally solved Torchia and put
the Icers up 2-1 with just 14 seconds to go in the second period as PSU
crashed the net. However, W&J was equal to the task and answered back just 8
seconds later as Chad Talotta and Mario Panucci were off on a 2 on 1.
Talotta kept the puck and roofed a shot over the left side of Signet to tie
the game with just 6 seconds remaining in the second period.
Despite
playing just last night, W&J had a hop in their legs and skated with
intensity. Ryne Savisky, Bob Rose, Jeff Rich, Bryan
Colligan, & Craig Frey hustled all night long and made the night
tough for the Icers. Forward Jeff Cobb returned from injury and
played consistently as usual. Savisky, Frey, and Rose back-checked all night
long and had the presence of mind to help the defense clear the zone and
make life tough for the Icers offense.
Defensively,
the Presidents clamped down and Rob Fitzpatrick (who played possessed
all night long), Aaron Siegel, David Bean,
Mike Guthrie, Matt Kubacki, and Clint Lang all played with
intensity and cleared the zone in front of Torchia.
W&J Freshman
forward Jim Pasquine created several scoring chances as well for the
Presidents and was stopped on a breakaway as he took a slick pass between
his legs and almost got one past Signet. Later on, Mario Panucci rang
one off the post as he blistered a wrist shot that caromed wide and the game
remained tied at 2.
In the third
and final period, W&J was whistled for an early penalty to put PSU on the
power play. PSU's Michael McMullen found a loose puck in the zone
after a failed W&J clearing attempt and promptly buried it from in front to
give the Icers a 3-2 lead. Once again it was Chad Talotta (second
goal of the night) who answered back on a rebound off of a Dave Crockett
shot on goal as the home crowd went wild.
 |
W&J
battled back as Chad Talotta sent home his 2nd goal of the game to tie
it at three but it was PSU who prevailed late with the 4-3 victory. |
PSU and W&J
battled back and forth down the stretch in a game that neither team should
have lost. PSU had a huge advantage with face-offs and were able to use this
to their advantage for most of the night and it especially helped them down
the stretch. It was PSU's Jamie Zimmel who ended the hopes of a W&J
upset as he took a cross ice outlet pass, found a seem up the side boards,
and patiently scored on a breakaway with just 20 seconds left to give PSU
the narrow win.

W&J EDGED BY KSU IN
PENALTY-FILLED AFFAIR
OCTOBER 6, 2006 -- W&J tried its hardest to battle through a penalty filled
game but inevitably could not find the equalizer in the third period against
the Golden Flashes of Kent State. Washington & Jefferson found itself
shorthanded for most of the game and did a great job killing off nearly
every penalty, including several 5 on 3's. The penalty killing and defense
did a tremendous job considering the circumstances it faced throughout the
entirety of the game.
W&J scored
first and took an early 1-0 lead on one of its few power play opportunites
as defenseman Clint Lang slapped a shot from the right point. With
some traffic in front of the net, Chad Talotta chipped home the
Presidents' first goal. Kent State answered back midway through the first as
Ryan Nawrocki was camped out on the back door and put home a rebound on the
rebound to notch the game at one.
KSU took a 2-1
lead in the second period but W&J answered back. Mario Panucci found
the back of the net for his second goal of the season. Panucci scored from
the left side after a nice centering pass from a patient Ryne Savisky
from behind the KSU net. On the play, Craig Frey helped create the
scoring opportunity with his traffic in front of the net. Panucci got open
and Savisky spotted him for the goal.

|
|
 |
Mario Panucci
(Sophomore #19) & Ryne Savisky (Freshman #22) have been connecting on
offense for the Presidents. |
After two
periods, despite being shorthanded for nearly the entire game, W&J found
itself deadlocked with Kent State. Just 30 seconds into the third, KSU
scored its third goal on what was a borderline kicking motion. Nevertheless,
the goal was allowed and there was still nearly a full period of play
remaining. The teams battled throughout the third period and Jed Michael
turned aside several scoring opportunities for the Golden Flashes.
 |
Junior Goaltender Jed
Michael kept the Presidents hopes alive vs. Kent State on Friday Night.
The Presidents were shorthanded for much of the game. |
 |
Forwards Chad Talotta
(36) & Bob Rose (8) look to dig a puck out of the corner versus KSU.
Talotta scored the Presidents' first goal of the game. |
The penalties
continued and W&J found itself in the box for the majority of the period
once again. For one of the few times in the game, W&J found itself on a 5 on
5 and was finally able to generate some offense in the period. W&J's Bob
Rose hit the post and with the goalie pulled with 30 seconds remaining
freshman David Crockett came down the right side and picked the top
left corner but rang it off the pipe. W&J was unable to find the tying goal
and found itself on the short end of another one goal loss.
 |
Craig
Frey skates to the bench after being hit by a puck. Frey left the game
but returned. |
Freshman
Ryne Savisky skated well and generated lots of offense and scoring
chances for the Presidents. Goaltender Jed Michael played well in net
and stopped several pucks from point blank range, including a big stop on a
breakaway in the second period that kept the game tied at one.

well in net for the Presidents. W&J will play Delaware again on

WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON SEASON PREVIEW
SEPTEMBER 26, 2006 - Another year of Washington & Jefferson Ice Hockey
is just on the horizon and the Presidents are gearing up for the
beginning of a promising and highly anticipated season as a member of
the newly formed College Hockey Mid-America (CHMA). Head Coach Peter
Taglianetti returns for his 2nd season at the helm for W&J Ice Hockey
as the team is looking to make the jump to the next level of advancing
and returning to Nationals at Kent State.

talent that has been recruited during the off-season, the Presidents
should improve significantly from the first drop of the puck. The

desired throughout most of last season.
