~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You have to admit that Yuu Watase is an amazing manga-ka. Fushigi Yuugi in itself is an amazing piece of work. The art is incredible, the characters are memorable, the story itself is believeable! I had no problems getting hooked to this show at all.
While, like most shows, there are those small little annoying things, Fushigi Yuugi has this way that just makes you forget about them. One such quirk in the show is Miaka and Tamahome's constant breaking up and makeing up relationship. When I first watched Fushigi Yuugi, I thought Tamahome was actually a pretty cool guy. But then as the show progressed, his character just seemed to be getting pretty damn annoying. Don't ask me why, I'm not sure why I don't like the guy myself... the point is, I don't like him.
Perhaps it's just the way he looks at things. Kind of like a Mamoru (Darien) from Sailor Moon, but with more style and no annoying roses who actually fights. I give this guy credit for at least protecting his chick. But what kind of relationship do you think you really have if yo are constantly breaking up and makeing up? Not a very good one. And personally, I think it gets pretty damn annoying with this happening through out the show. Either be together or don't!
When you think about what is really going on... it's a battle between best friends. That's cool. But still... you'd figure that Yui, being as "smart" as she is, would have known that her little idea of "revenge" would put the entire world into danger, right? The "ditz" Miaka knew it! Hell, she figured that out on her own! Just goes to show how downright selfish kids can be these days.
But these are only small quirks in the series. Just stupid things that you realize are there when you've watched the shows long enough. But think about it. How many series actully have bad guys with a GOOD reason to be the way they are? Not many. Nakago is one of the best villians I've seen in anime (followed closely by Vicious, mind you). We could serisouly use more villians like him. Hardcore-I-Don't-Give-A-Shit-about-What-Happens kind of villians.
So if you're looking for a good, not to mention extremely long, series. Grab some Fushigi Yuugi. It's characters are unforgettable, the villians are kick ass, and the story line (while incredible stupid at times) will blow you away.
