Episode #7

Liar, Liar

(heading to school)

Tsuta:  Morning, Noelle.

Noelle: Good morning, Tsuta!  How are you?

Tsuta:  Tired.  I’m sick of hearing about that stupid girl on the news.  It’s so pathetic!

Noelle: (laughing nervously) Yeah, I know….

Tsuta: I mean, what fools would really believe that some magical girls and their flying unicorns really exist?

Kaigara: (pops up) You’re so mean!  You’re worse than Wakaru! (runs off crying; Noelle and Tsuta have little tear drops on their foreheads)

Noelle: Except Kaigara.

Tsuta: She’s a little too into unicorns.

(in class)

Tsuta: (to Kaigara) I’m really sorry, Kaigara.  I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings.

Kaigara: (sniffles) It’s ok.  I just thought with the big deal the news is making over it that someone would finally believe me.  Even Wakaru laughs and says it’s just a stupid story.

Kanshin: Hey, Daitan!  Can you believe that there really is someone who believes in that unicorn crap?

Daitan: I know.  I mean, they’re just pathetically desperate for a good story.  But the one they picked isn’t good.  How can anyone be so stupid to believe that?  (both laugh.  Noelle steps up in front of both of them and their laughing quickly stops)

Noelle: Have you finally figured out that detention doesn’t bother me?

Kanshin: (tear drop; nervously) Hey, sorry Noelle.  But you can’t blame us.  It is a dumb story.  (pauses)  Don’t tell me you believe it, too!

Noelle: (nervously) Well…uh…

Daitan: She does believe it!

Noelle: I DO NOT! (knocks Daitan who casually flies across the room and hits the wall.  Since this had been a typical daily routine, no one takes any notice)

Niji: (jealously) Well, Noelle.  You guys are all wrong.  It is true.  And I know who one of the girls is.

(everyone in the classroom surrounds Niji.  Even though no one would admit that they believed the story, they really did.  Even Kanshin, Daitan, and Tsuta and listening.  Noelle is perplexed and nervous)

Kanshin:  Really?  You know who it is?

Class:  Who is it?  Tell me!  How do you know?

Niji: (quietly) I’m not supposed to tell anyone, but…(in a whisper) it’s me.

Class: What!!??  (Noelle falls over her chair and has one leg up in the air)

Niji: Yup!  I’ve been given the gift of these powers in order to protect the Earth!

Someone: How did you get them?

Niji: I was just born with them.  I found out I had these powers only recently.  Guess I’m pretty lucky that I was at the fair at the right time.

Someone: Wow!

Shinpai: You’re so cool!

Ichigo: I can’t believe my best friend is that magical girl from tv!  (all start talking excitedly)

Kaigara:  Can I get you’re autograph!

Noelle: (quickly pulls Kaigara away) Kaigara!  What are you doing?

Kaigara: Um…trying to get an autograph?  Come on, Noelle!  She’s famous!

Noelle:  Yeah, but she probably can’t prove it.  She’s just lying.

Niji:  Lying?  (walks over to Noelle and slaps her across the face) How dare you call me a liar!  You’re just jealous, Noelle!  You’re pathetic!

Noelle: If I’m the one pathetic, why are you the one pretending to be someone you aren’t?

Class: Fight, fight, fight!

Tsuta: This will be an interesting fight.  Karate girl versus unicorn girl.

Noelle:  (bitterly)  Not you, too, Tsuta!

Someone: Come on, Niji!  Show us your power!  I want to see!

Mrs. Suisho: What is going on?  Back in your seats! (turns to Niji) Well, Noelle.  Looks like you’ll be having some company in detention today, right Niji? (she walks away.  Niji and Noelle glare at each other.  Daitan is still against the wall)

(lunch)

Daraku: Hey, Noelle?  What was that all about?

Noelle: (grumbles) I don’t know.

Daraku: She can’t say that.  I don’t know what her problem is, but I’m going to settle it. (starts to get up)

Noelle: Daraku!  What do you mean by “I’m going to settle it?”  You’re not going to hurt her now, are you?

Daraku: You’ll see.  I won’t hurt her, I promise.  (leaves.  Noelle slouches in her chair angrily)

Tsuta:  Chill out, Noelle.  Daraku won’t hurt her.  You need to give him a chance.

Noelle: Yeah…right…

Tsuta: One thing, though, Noelle.  Why do you think Niji is wrong?  I mean, it is a whole farfetched story, but what if she is telling the truth?

Kaigara: (excitedly) Yeah!  What if she is telling the truth?

Tsuta: No offense, but I think you’re jealous.

Noelle: (gets up angrily and slams hands on table) Why are you on her side, too?  What happened to what you said this morning?  I thought you didn’t believe this made up story!

Tsuta: Well, it is a consideration, Noelle!  I mean, she could be lying, but we don’t know for sure.

Kaigara: Niji has to be telling the truth!  If not, I just wasted five bucks on her autograph.  (Tsuta and Noelle sigh)

(Detention)

Mrs. Suisho: I want each of you to write a three page paper about how fighting is not the answer to settling an argument.  Noelle, you can make that five pages.  With all of your experiences, this should be a piece of cake for you.  I have a meeting to go to, so I’ll be back in an hour or so.  You two better not give any problems while I’m away.  I expect the papers to be finished by the time I get back.  (leaves)  (Noelle sighs)

Niji: This is all your fault.

Noelle:  Mine?  And what about you?

Niji: You use to be my friend.  And now you call me a liar.

Noelle: Friend?  Don’t forget, you’re the one who ditched me first.  And just so you could be popular!  Some friend you are! (both are silent, then they both hear a scream.  Both run to the window)

Niji: What’s going on?

Noelle: It’s another attack!

Niji: Oh!

Noelle: (slyly) Well, better get out there and fight, Niji.  The whole school would love to see your powers in action.

Niji: Well…uh…

Noelle: I’ll be watching downstairs.  See you later, Niji!  Good luck! (leaves dumbfounded Niji and runs to an empty girl’s room where she transforms  (to herself)

Nova: I wonder what Dark Star is up to?

***********************************************************

(outside; Nova comes running in)

Nova: (stops; confused) Huh?  There’s no one here?  But I heard a scream….

Dark Star: (quietly) Sssh!  I’ll explain later. (loudly) WELL, IT LOOKS LIKE IT’S THE END FOR YOU!

Nova: (little teardrop on forehead) This is really weird.

Dark Star: (quietly) Just fight me!

Nova: Um…ok.  (turns to Butterjewel who just came in) You ready?  Butterjewel, Attack Power! (Dark Star puts his hand up to block the attack which’s power hits Nova and her Butterjewel.  Both fall over) Umph!

Dark Star: (proudly) I won’t be that easy!

Nova: (thoughts) Where’s Tsuki?  And what is Dark Star trying to pull? (out loud to Dark Star) You know we can beat you!  (gets on Butterjewel and charges toward Dark Star) Attack Power!  (both charge up to Dark Star who tries to block their attack.  Noelle and her Butterjewel struggle to withstand the attack without falling.  They manage to hit and break Dark Star’s force shield.  Dark Star jumps up above them and disappears)

Nova: (totally confused) You know, I think he planned that.  That had to be the weirdest fight in I have ever seen.

****************************************************************

(classroom; Noelle enters)

Noelle: (sarcastically) You did great, Niji!  You’re really fast, too, to be back up here before me!

Niji: (grumbles) Ok, ok.  So I lied.  Are you happy now, Noelle?  (a couple of tears trickle down her face)

Noelle: I just want to know why you lied.

Niji: I don’t know…just to fit in I guess.

Noelle: So telling everyone you had special powers is suppose to make you fit in?

Niji: No.  It just made me feel like I was…someone.  Someone special; other than Niji.

Noelle: But you don’t have to lie to feel special.  You already are; I mean, you got all those new friends now.

Niji: Yeah, I guess you’re right.  (Mrs. Suisho comes in)

Mrs. Suisho: That’s what I wanted to hear. (both, surprised, turn around)  You understand clearly that fighting never solves any problems and neither does lying.  You may go now...  (both start to leave) Noelle!

Noelle: (quickly sits back down) Well, you can’t blame me for trying!

****************************************************

(Noelle’s walking home by herself)

Daraku: Hey, Noelle!  Wait up! (glumly turns around) Well, you don’t have to be so cheerful about seeing me.

Noelle: Hmph!  How am I suppose to be cheerful?  (continues walking)

Daraku: Look, we need to talk.  About what happened today.  Earthling to earthling.

Noelle: (turns around; suspiciously) Yeah.  What was that all about?

Daraku: (teardrop on forehead) Well, it was a set up…

Noelle: (angrily) I could tell that!

Daraku:  Look.  Your friend, Niji…(Noelle gives him an even angrier look)…ok, your ex-friend, Niji…if she continued telling those lies, she could destroy both of us and herself.  The battles cannot be secret, but out identities must be.

Noelle: Yeah, yeah.  Tsuki already told me about all that.

Daraku: That means you too, Noelle.

Noelle:  Me?  What are you talking about?

Daraku: If you keep arguing with me without having any logical reason, people will get suspicious.  Tsuta already finds it odd.  As enemies, we fight; but as earthlings, we need to get along.  Ok, Noelle?

Noelle: I can’t believe I’m making a deal with my own enemy, but you’re right.  It’s a deal!  (both shake hands and then start to walk away)

Daraku: Oh, Noelle? (Noelle turns around) Next time we fight, you are going to lose!  (walks away laughing; Noelle pulls down her eye and sticks her tongue out at him angrily)

Noelle:  In your dreams!!!!

*******************************************************

(practicing)

Nova: So why didn’t you come to Dark Star’s little fake battle?

Tsuki: Well, since it wasn’t real, I probably didn’t react to it.  He didn’t have any Firewidows except for his own.

Nova: Yeah.  Guess I overlooked that.

Tsuki: You can’t do that in battles.  Every minor detail leads to our victory and the things we overlook will lead to our downfall.

Nova: Good point.  My Butterjewel broke Dark Star’s force shield in only two shots.  She’s getting much stronger!

Tsuki: That’s great, Nova.  But you still need more training if you want to be as strong as me and my Unijewel.

Nova: How can we get stronger than you if every time we practice, you are always getting stronger?

Tsuki: Um…(both laugh and go back to training)
