Nahuatl Lesson #24
                   Ihkuak Nimikiz
                 (When I die)

No Nantzin: Ihkuak Nimikia,
(My precious mother; when I die,)
Mo Tlekuilpa: Ixinechtoka!
(Bury me in your fireplace!)
Iuan Ihkuak Tlatitlaxkachiuaz,
(And when you go to make tortillas,)
Iuan Tlakatl Tlataniz:
(And someone asks you:)
Ziaupilli, Tlekatichoka?
(Little woman, why do you cry?)
Zanuelliui Kiknankuilli!:
(Quickly respond:)
Xoxoltik In Kuauitl Iuan Popoka!
(Green is the firewood and it smokes!)

                                              - Nezahualcoyotl

Exercise: Memorize this poem, a creation of the Tlatoani Nezahualcoyotl (The Fasting Coyote).  In effect, the tears of the mother are attributed to the smoke of the green wood, simulating in this form the pain felt by the mother after the death of her son.  Repeat the poem in Nahuatl in a high voice.
