The Hit

He stepped up to the plate
Both feet firmly on the ground
He looked at the crowd
They made nary a sound
He knew this was it
They expected a hit
No ordinary excuse would do
If he missed
He would have to think up something new

One look at the pitcher
He saw in his eyes
Determination and surprise
With just a squint
in his left eye
a signal was given to the catcher
with nary a hint
of what he would try

All of a sudden it happened
and then the ball flew
coming right at him
he suddenly knew
Just where to place his bat
It was a homerun
But, all he heard was a crack
as the ball hit the bat

Standing in surprise
he could not believe his eyes
the crowd cheered
and as reality cleared
he ran the bases
all four,
one by one
one wave at the crowd
and he was done. . .
