Timeline of the Vÿkstraak
Current Year: 3133 by the reckoning of the Elder Clans
Prior to 552- Vÿkstra Tribes live along the coasts of Harstag, Dÿnmar, and Surijuk. They are scattered and ruled by various elders and kings.
554-659: Vÿkstra raiders land on the northern coasts of Aridisia. They find the climate to be far warmer and more temperate than their bitterly cold homes to the north. They gather timber and stores there, returning regularly during the winter months.
651: Orren Maarstenson becomes lost in the northern sea en route from ancient Hårstag to the Island of Norskraa. His ship is driven south and lands on the shores of Aridisia at what will later be known as Ar-Hiskogt.
652: Orren Maarstenson returns to Hårstag and tells the people about a great land of riches nearly devoid of people.
655: The first permanent Vÿkstra settlement is established in the forests of the Northern Coast by Orren Maarstenson and his followers. It is named Ar-Hiskogt in the Vÿkstra tongue. Translated to Modern vernacular meaning: Deep Gray Water. The settlers are from a tribe known as the Hordrÿsk, from the western reaches of Hårstag.
660-712: Settlements are founded all along the northern coast of Aridisia. Few survive more than a season or two. The major settlements include Hehurin Dhurik, Marinacht, and Osten- Gaard. All the while, Ar-Hiskogt remains the largest and richest of the settlements.
733: Harimaar, lord of the Vÿkstra in Ar-Hiskogt defies his lord, Thain Taruk of Hårstag, and declares himself Thain of the Northern Aridisian coast, or Naaren-Gaird. The other settlements of the north coast do not submit to him, and he prepares for war.
737: The warriors of Hårstag, aided by the men of Marinacht, land their longboats at the port of Ar-Hiskogt and march on the Hall of Harimaar. Battle ensues in which the men of Ar-Hiskogt drive the invaders back to their ships, where they put out to sea and are drowned by rising storms in the North Sea.
744: Thain Urik hur-Taruk, son of Taruk, recognizes Thain Harimaar I in return for aid against invaders from Surijuk. Harimaar sends thirty longboats of warriors to Uriks aid. His army is greater than the population of Uriks own city of Saar-Innan. The northern Thains finally recognize the growing power of the Aridisian coast. Harimaars men utterly crush the Surijuk invaders. A great bounty is sent across the northern sea as spoils of war.
755: Thain Harimaar I dies of old age. His son, Haryld I, becomes Thain. He sets about uniting the coastal cities of Aridisia.
757: Thain Haryld marries his son, Harimaar II to the daughter and only child of the Thain of Marinacht, ensuring that a scion of Harimaar will rule both cities. The settlement of Suden Hadlyn is founded by Harimaar II some seventy five miles south of Ar-Hiskogt.
764: Thain Haryld is killed by Haarik-Mor, a lord sworn to his service. Harimaar II gathers his men of Suden Hadlyn and many from Marinacht and marches on Ar-Hiskogt. He is defeated by the men of Haarik-Mor, who styles himself Thain Haarik I. Harimaar II is killed in the battle. Haarik takes Harimaars widow to wife to legitimize his claim to the city of Marinacht. He takes Harwald, the infant son of Harimaar as his hostage and ward to subdue his enemies.
773: There are now four settlements under the rule of Thain Haarik, as a new stronghold is founded in the Forest of Muurinark. Muurinark is the first Vÿkstra settlement in Aridisia to be located far from a river or outlet to the ocean.
779: Thain Haariks wife dies mysteriously, he accuses two sworn lords of murder and kills them in duels. He re-marries immediately to Wistryl, daughter of the Thain of Dÿnmar.
788-844: Numerous settlements are established south of Ar-Hiskogt. Numerous wars with neighboring Thains mark the northern histories, settlements farther inland enjoy relatively long periods of peace.
844-899: Periodic outbreaks of Winter Plague decimate the Elder Lands and the coastal cities of Aridisia. The inland settlements are mostly unaffected.
900: The Elder lands have all but lost any semblance of power over the Southern Thains. The Southern Thains have formed themselves into 9 distinct kingdoms encompassing 5 or more settlements and cities each. The smallest kingdom is twice as large and rich as the most powerful of the Elder lands.
1100: First contact between the Southern Settlements and the Haarinkards (translated; Dark Heads, for their characteristic black or brown hair colors). The Southern settlements have largely dis-associated themselves from their northern kin. They are farmers and woodsmen, and not inclined to needless violence.
1150: Harinaards, known now as Aridisians, arrive in greater numbers, building stone fortresses and strongholds all along the Sirrik River. The Thains have laid claim to this region, and skirmishes ensue.
1165: Thain Margyn II of Ar-Hoskigt gathers his men and leads them to assault the regional Governor at the Fortress of Bordeau, at the fork of the Sirrik and Hinkel rivers. His men face mounted soldiers for the first time and are routed.
1177: The Aridisians, under Lord Monteneau Gilliume, lay claim to the entirety of the Northern forests, including the coastlands, and begin a long campaign of conquest.
1185: The first of the Vÿkstra kingdoms of the Northern coast crumbles under the determined assault Gilliume, now styled as Duke Monteneau Gilliume I.
1200: Six Vÿkstra kingdoms remain, they are huddled on the Northern coast. Each year, more and more Aridisian settlers enter the lands once ruled by the Thains. King Viskard of Ar-Hoskigt (the title of Thain disappeared some 100 years before) gathers his Earls in hopes of stemming the tide of battle. A Large army of professional fighters (Carls) is gathered and equipped.
1201: The populace of the Southern Lands is mobilized against the Aridisians (Fyrd is Gathered) to support the Carls. The northern army meets the force of Duke Windham, son of Gilliume at the field of Mattamer. The Battle lasts an entire day, but Windham has the upper hand in the end. Visgard is killed, as are most of the men in his army. The North now lies open to conquest for the Aridisians.
1210: Last of the Vÿkstra cities falls to the Aridisians.
1220: Duke Marten Margrave of the Northern dukedom of Sementeau comes to power in the north. His seat is at Mattamer, now called Fleurrany, in the newly-constructed fortress of Argonet.
1226: Lieuen IV, emperor of the Aridisian continent is murdered, and a struggle for power ensues, lasting some 35 years.
1262: Marten III, duke of Sementeau, begins to root out the last of the Northman influence in Horwald, and replaces all of the Northern nobles with Aridisians loyal to himself.
1266-1279: Various scattered uprisings by the Northmen in Horwald. None is a serious threat to Margrave or the King.
1442: the Duke of Sementeau, Marcel Margrave II, dies without an heir. No suitable Margrave can be found, the King appoints Henry of Fluerry to the seat. Henry titles his family Ormien.
1672: The Last Ormien heir dies childless, Michel Morhame, related only through marriage, becomes Duke of Sementeau (the Northern Province). He begins the Marhames branch of the line of Ormien Dukes.
2420-2429: War in the East. Martine Morhame leaves Horwald (Sementeau) to fight for the king.
2429: Morhame returns from war to find the Vÿkstraak has swept the north, and cries of oppression are heard.
2430: Morhame begins a fierce repression of the old tongues and tales in the north.
2430: Harold Gendry (Harald Jendrÿk) gathers and army and fights Morhame.
2433: Morhame is killed by peasants in highbridge.
2434: Jendrÿk swears allegiance to the King, Becomes Harold Gendry, Duke of Sementeau.
2480: Harman Gendry renames Sementeau "Horwald."
