Bearing in mind that we need to be out of the hurricane box by July 1st, it’s time to be moving on, especially since the weather has kept us pinned down for several days. We start out for Guadeloupe via Montserrat, but with the wind right on the nose and the seas very confused, we can’t lay our course. Eventually we head on back to Nevis to wait another day.
Meanwhile, we hear “Scott Free” talking to “R. W. Mist” who is just a few miles south of them regarding the situation in Montserrat. The magma dome collapsed and is spewing out ash and sulfuric acid fumes in a plume 60,000 ft high. Unfortunately, the winds were directly out of the south instead of the usual southeast, so R. W. Mist was being inundated with the fallout. R. W. Mist & Scott-Free diverted to Antigua instead.
The next day we put our game face on and start out to Guadeloupe, 45 miles. Nope, winds on the nose and 6’ to 8’ seas - and of course, the only course we can lay is to Montserrat! OK, so we drop anchor in Five Islands and plan to head into Jolly Harbor to clear in and relax for a few days. No great hardship here, we wanted to see Antigua anyway. |

Took a bus over to English Harbor to check out Lord Nelson’s Dockyard and Shirley Heights, and notice quite a few boats in the harbor. Checked out Falmouth Harbor, especially the nautical bookstore, then back to Jolly Harbor for a swim and a grill-out. Really enjoyed the nice grocery store, especially the key lime coconut patties dipped in dark chocolate.
Antigua Reprisal - Nov - Dec, 2007
After a hot, but fun-filled hurricane season in parts south, we decided to head straight up to Antigua for some cooler climes. The following shots were taken on a circumnavigation of Antigua which took us about 5 weeks. We headed clockwise around from Jolly Harbor to Bird Island, Green Island, Falmouth, Jolly again then Deep Bay for Christmas. We caught the super mega-yacht race out of English Harbor which was great - the Maltese Falcon is really something to see in action. |
