Winnipeg Free Press Obituaries August 16, 2000 ALAN ANDREW BORGER B.Sc. (CE), P.Eng. On August 14, 2000, at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Alan Andrew Borger, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Helen of 40 years; and his children, Alan, Katherine and David (Jo-Ann). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Hayleigh, Alisa, David John and Brianna; and by brothers, Donald, Henry, Ralph and Gerald; sister Barbara Graham of Mississauga, ON; brother-in-law Dr. James Foster of Canning, NS, and their families. He was predeceased by his daughter Nancy Marie; his parents, John Henry and Barbara Borger; in-laws, David C. and Mary Foster; brother in infancy John Henry; brother-in-law Robert Graham; and niece Barbara Graham. Alan was born on December 30, 1933, in Winnipeg where he resided most of his life. He was baptized at Christ Lutheran Church and was confirmed at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer where he was an active member, serving on the Board of Trustees for several years. Alan attended school at Ralph Brown, Machray and Kelvin, and graduated in 1959 from the University of Manitoba with a B.Sc. (CE). Alan worked with his father for many years. From 1959 to 1962, he worked in Calgary and Winnipeg for Borger Brothers Limited. In 1963, he became General Manager of Borger Brothers (1963) Limited. He served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Borger Industries Limited and Ladco Company Limited from 1976 until the time of his death. Alan also served on a number of corporate, community, and industry boards and associations including Ruttan Development Corporation Limited, Supercrete Incorporated, the Economic Council of Canada, the Heavy Construction Wages Board, the Winnipeg Sun Advisory Board, the Winnipeg Symphony and the Concordia Hospital Advisory Board. He served as President of the Prairie Road Builders Association, the Manitoba Road Builders Association and the American Public Works Association (Manitoba Chapter), as a Trustee of the American Public Works Association, and as Co-Chair of the Winnipeg Airport Lands Corporation. He was a leader in several industries and because of his considerable business acumen, his advice was often sought by his contemporaries. He enjoyed golf and was a member of the Niakwa C.C., St. Charles C.C. and Cathedral Canyon C.C. in Palm Springs, CA. He was also a member of the Manitoba Club. Many thanks to the doctors and nurses who helped Alan through his final days. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 18 at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 59 Academy Rd., with Pastor James Scholz officiating. Viewing prior to service. Pallbearers will be his nephews, Mark, Henry and Timothy Borger, Robert and Matthew Graham, and Andrew Foster. Honorary pallbearers will be Marcel Taillieu, Russ Hood, Marty Margulius, George LaFrance, Gary Brazzell, Barrie Brooks, Dave Brown, John Antoniuk, Bob Jackson, Michael Dennehy, Garnett Millard and Leo Cholakis.
