| Web Posted April 2, 2001 12:00:00 AM CBC Calgary Symons Valley plan approved CALGARY - City Council has approved the biggest housing development in the city's history on Monday. The Symons Valley Community Plan forecasts 54-thousand people – about the population of Red Deer – will live on Calgary's northern limits. "We've addressed special care facilities, young families, single parents, the elderly, and we're going to create almost a mini-city of upwards of 55,000 people," says Alderman Joanne Kerr, who represents the area. When council considered the plan a month ago, concerns were expressed about the environment, schools and traffic. But the seven developers involved in the plan assured council on Monday that they will all be addressed in the building process. Construction is expected to begin in the fall. It will take more than 10 years to build the five communities making up the Symons Valley Community Plan. |
