Public consultation needed on Kapyong: NDP
WINNIPEG - The NDP candidate for Winnipeg South Centre wants to make Winnipeg's Kapyong Barracks an election issue.
The Second Battalion of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry leave Kapyong June 18 for a new home at Canadian Forces Base Shilo, near Brandon.
Standing in the rain outside the barracks on Monday, Allum promised that if he is elected, he will consult the public about the land's future.
"We're going to be engaging, organizing a full public consultation process here immediately following the election," he vowed.
"We're going to get the residents involved in a way. We're going to get planners and architects and experts involved, and we're going to have a full and open discussion on what should happen here. That's the first thing that needs to happen, not plans made behind back doors that we're not familiar with."
First Nations groups have expressed interest in turning the site into an urban reserve.
Winnipeg South Centre has traditionally been held by Liberal or Progressive Conservative MPs. Raj Josh is running for the Conservatives. Liberal Anita Neville is the incumbent.
