Each flyer was awarded his "Heine Honking" Certificate at the war's conclusion. I was a member of the 55th Fighter Group, a highly-decorated unit. This unit switched from the P-38 to the single engine P-51 fighter plane in July, 1944. To those nearing the end of their combat tour the switch was anguishing. (By coincidence I had 17 missions in the P-38 Lighting and 18 in the Mustang.) Our group lost 181 pilots of whom 17 sucessfully evaded and walked out, 91 were killed in action and 70 imprisoned. |
