The last thing you want to do is turn this into a job interview. * Open-Ended Question: Have you ever found yourself in a conversation with someone and the conversation starts to go dull, so you decide to plug in a question to jump start it, only to get a one word response? The reason this happens is because you ask close ended questions. You ask something like "Did you like the movie?" That's just a yes or no question. An open ended question cannot be answered by one word. It puts a person in a position to commit, at a minimum, a sentence or two. An example of one would be "What do you think of that guys hat?"
